Ash-Greninja

ita icon_satoshipediaThe Ash Form

Ash GreninjaThe “Ash Form” is a form that only Ash’s Greninja can take. It is a synchronization between Ash and Greninja called “Bond Phenomenom” and appears to have ancient origins.

Bond Phenomenom

The Bond Phenomenon occurs very rarely, when the mutual trust between Pokémon and his trainer reaches very high levels, and the two manage to dominate it.

The Pokémon can use the “Bond Phenomenom” possess a special ability, thanks to which they manage to understand which trainer is able to bring out this hidden power. That’s why Greninja chose only and exclusively Ash as it’s trainer, rejecting anyone else.

The phenomenon occurs when the brain impulses of Ash and Greninja synchronize up to join. At that point the two are related to each other as if they were in one body.

During the syncronization, Greninja transforms and it becomes similar in appearance to Ash. Their movements are identical and, as revealed by one of Clemont’s689698 gadgets, they share the same heartbeat. Ash can also see through Greninja’s eyes, in fact he describes what he feels during the syncronization as if he “becomes” Greninja.

However, this phenomenon has side effects for Ash, which in fact states that he feels very tired after every syncronization, and every time that 68690Greninja is hit, Ash can feel the pain in the same spots in which his pokémon is hurt. hiohi2

The energy released by the syncronization can also be too violent for Ash, to the point that his body becomes paralized and he faints because of the pain and fatigue. Currently he’s trying to understand how to learn and control this power, by training intensively with Greninja.

To be able to withstand the power of synchronization, Ash conviced himself that he has to become as similar as possible to Greninja. Due to this he undergoes himself to its same workouts, although with difficulty since, obviously, an human cannot compete phisically with a Pokémon.

After the first training, Ash accepted a battle against Champion Diantha. In this occasion, new traits of the synchronization came out. This time Ash 76472resitsted longer, reaching a “new level”. The brain waves analysis performed by Lem recorded some changes: their intensity became higher and higher. At the same time Ash seemed increasingly “involved” in the fight and started to repeat phrases like “much, much stronger!!! ” or “much, much faster!” very frequently until Greninja jumped out from the water veil that had always surrounded him. Since then, the veil became a big water-shuriken.

53643

The power reached by Ash and Greninja was so high that floored Diantha’s Gardevoir. At that point, though, Ash seemed almost “crazy” and AshGreninjawhile Lem’s indicator was still recording abnormal brain waves, he ordered Greninja to go on with what turned out to be a ruthless knockout blow for Gardevoir. If Ash hadn’t suddenly collapsed again, he would have defeated champion Diantha’s Pokémon in all probability.

During the battle against Sawyer (episode XY118) for the first time the synchronization failed. Ash was flooredb by that and initially no one was able to understand why that happened. The only thing that Clemont was able to state is that, during the battle, Ash’s and Greninja’s pulses were completely desynchronized. Following the events of the episode XY120 it is knew that the synchronization is probably not happen because Ash was unconsciously worried due to Sawyer, who has won his last medal before him and has become unexpectedly strong in a short time.

During the first fight against Wulfric (episode XY 119) Ash managed to synchronize with Greninja. However, he could feel all the hits received by Greninja and this annoyed him.  Fearing another defeat because of a collapse, Ash lost his concentration and ended up suffering from many attack. When Greninja was thrown violently against a wall, Ash was no longer able to bear the pain and collapsed again, causing the defeat of his Pokémon (since they were synchronized).

Ash feared he had disappointed Greninja, and that night he apologized to him for not being able to bear the hit. If Ash had endured more, Greninja could have unleashed its full power. Therefore, Ash must learn to resist more... But how?

As usual when he feels sad and discouraged, Ash asks his friends to be left alone. So he walked the Winding Woods in search of an answer.

ytrytru

(episode XY120) After being scolded by Serena, Ash recovered his optimism, remembering that whatever the difficulties are, he must never give up. This helped him when, a few hours later, he and Greninja saved a Pokémon in danger during a snowstorm. The will to save that Pokémon was so strong that allowed Ash and Greninja to achieve perfect synchronization.

534523

At that point, Ash apologized again to Greninja: he gave priority to gaining the badge and keeping up with Sawyer, to whom he had promised to immediately win it. During the battle, Ash’s only thought was: “I’m a trainer so I have to do my best and hang on”, but in the forest he understood that this does not necessarily mean succeeding in it alone. He has a precious friend at his side, ready to give him his strength.

Greninja’s story

Before knowing Ash, Greninja was one of the frokies available at Professor Sycamore’s laboratory for the new trainers. However, compared to the other Pokémon of the same species, Ash’s Froakie was very different. As explained by Gym Leader Olympia, it is a Pokémon with a peculiar destiny. In fact it never played with the other ones in its herd6808, and it spent all its time training so it could become stronger and stronger. However, this was the cause of a fight with the others, and it ended up hurt and being medicated by Nurse Joy. Thanks to her kindness, she managed to teach it that it couldn’t become stronger all on its own: it needed a trainer.

Froakie, however, didn’t just want any trainer. It was determined to understand which trainer was worth dedicating its life. It expected great things from its trainer, but every time someone chose it, Froakie ended up disappointed and decided to go back to Professor Sycamore’s laboratory. This went on until it meet Ash.709Froakie was very impressed by Ash’s determination, by his courage and by his love for the Pokémon. And so it chose him as its trainer. It is thanks to this special connection between Ash and Greninja that the syncronization can occur.68969

Pokémon Contests

Ash has also participated at several Pokémon Contests, for fun and to help his friends May and Dawn, although he is not at all prepared for this type of competition, as admitted by the same Ash, whom, being focused on the effectiveness of the moves, tends to forget to present them elegantly.

Despite this, Ash has always carefully observed the Pokémon Contests, from which he’s often able to draw inspiration for some of his most spectacular battle moves (to learn more go to THIS LINK).

Below, here’s Pokémon Contests to which he took part, with all the positions in which he is classified:

Terracotta Town Pokémon Contest Champions
Pokémon Contest in Terracotta Town, in which he won on a par with May (episode: “Home is Where the Start is“, series Battle Frontier)

Ash’s Method of training and fighting style

ita icon_satoshipediaAsh says that he and his Pokemon are like a big family and this affects his training method, based primarily on trust and on encouragement of his Pokémon, in order to develop their strong points.

Many trainers tend to think that in order to strenghten a Pokémon it is necessary to work on his weaknesses, but Ash realized that the best thing is to use the strengths of a Pokémon to cover its weaknesses.

To cite an example: when his Turtwig has evolved into Grotle has not been able to move as fast as before, so Ash helped the Pokemon to change his fighting style, working on the resistance, so that Grotle could have been able to take lumps, rather than dodge them, and then attack at the right time.

Although Ash instills much confidence and positivity to his Pokémon (to the point of being willing to make as target of their moves in order to help them), in training he often becomes severe and intransigent: he doesn’t claim that his Pokémon tire too much or sacrifice themselves in any way, but he demands commitment and will, saying they should never give up and that evolution can never replace a bit of healthy work.

Regarding evolutions, Ash has always been very understanding with his Pokémon: he doesn’t force a Pokémon to evolve, especially if against his will, because he claims that a Pokémon can become very powerful without evolving if trained with patience and love (which is possible in the animated series, being different from the game).

One of the greatest of Ash’s skill is to know how to devise tactics based on the battles of others, and then customize and strengthen them in his own way. A clear example of this is the Counter Shield, Ash’s most important technique, to which he has arrived after having upgraded with time two techniques developed by Dawn: the Spinning and the Ice Aqua Jet.

The Spinning consisted in rotating the Pokémon, a way to avoid elegantly and efficiently the shots. Ash had the idea to strengthen this technique with rotations of different directions, which gave rise to a spectacular battle in the first Sinnoh Gym.

Later, Dawn had the idea to use Ice Beam to transform her Buizel’s Aqua Jet in a ice bullet, but she was never able to reach the desired effect. When Buizel became Ash’s Pokémon (following an exchange with Dawn), he understood that, in order to ensure a successful technique Buizel had to rotate, in this way it was able to complete the move, which has been renamed “Ice Aqua Jet”. The same Dawn said that it was necessary Ash’s ability for the technique to come out.

The last level where Ash brought these rotations is the Counter Shield, a technique entirely created by him which consists of blocking an opponent’s attack by using another one, in order to attack and defend at the same time.

It was originally designed to contrast the gym leader Fantina’s Hypnosis.

Ash got this idea when he saw Lucinda’s Ambipom contrasting Delcatty’s Sing using Double Hit. Then, the boy decided to strengthen this strategy, applying the tactics of the spinning: rotating and simultaneously launching their special attacks, Pokémon would have created a barrier with which they would have blocked the opponents’ moves, and at the same time attack the opponent Pokémon.

During the battle with Fantina, it has been created a situation which led Ash to reveal another characteristic of his Counter Shield: it could block not only Hypnosis, but also other moves, like Dark Pulse. Fantina was taken by surprise… after seeing Ash’s Counter Shield, she decided to make trouble for Ash, lining up on the field its Mismagius, unable to use Hypnosis.

Ash’s motto is “The best way to defend is to attack”, which is reflected, in fact, also in the technique of Counter Shield that he has developed. Ash generally prefer to use the attacks as a defense, rather than dodge, but of course, he is also adept at dodging hits: he always teaches his Pokémon to wait until the last second before dodging a move, in order to surprise their opponents.

Thanks to the original episodes, we can see that Ash is also excellent at physics sciences. He used several times: levers, forces, accelerations and combinations of natural elements to his advantage.

Ash is in fact known to all to be a very skilled strategist.
He’s able to devise sudden strategies, that no one would dare even think, when he is in a critical situation, displacing the opponent who lowers his guard thinking he practically won. Most of these sudden strategies are based on the control of the battle field, that Ash always manages to use to the advantage of his Pokémon
(For example he made Chimchar skate on a piece of ice because he could not move on frozen ground, or use rocks as if they were trees to make quickly move his Treecko, a Pokémon who’s used to move and live in forests).

Regarding to this, Brock said several times that “Ash is a genius at gaining total control of the Battle Field”. This is what makes him unbeatable.

Ash’s strategist skills are also visible in other situations: sometimes he pretends to be in difficulty or have made a mistake and keeps hidden until his Pokémon’s last few techniques, just to let down the opponent’s guard. Ash is extremely crafty during battle, much more than it seems and it is very difficult to deceive him, as said, for example, by the same gym leader Fantina.

One thing that Ash always recommendeds to those who ask him advice about the battles is to keep focused :you should never be distracted and think of something else, but try as much as possible to be in tune with your own Pokémon, in order to understand when it’s pushed to its limits and to be ready for every single situation.
