Ash’s Family

ita icon_satoshipediaThe only information we have about Ash’s family come from books written by the creator of the animated series Takeshi Shudo (of which is spoken at THIS LINK).

Although Ash’s life has always been very happy, his family situation does not look very goodThe reason for which Ash’s parents are separated is that his father abandoned the family a little while later Ash’s birth, leaving a young 19-year old Delia alone.
As for Ash’s grandparents, it is only know that Delia’s father abandoned the family to become a Pokémon trainer when she was little, while her mother died due to an illness when Delia was pregnant of Ash. Also because of this situation, Ash wants his Pokémon to be a big family: he says that in each episode. This because he wants to enlarge his family in some way (in addition, of course, to want create a climate of solidarity between his pokemon).

In the whole story, the character who arises the most curiosity is the mysterious father of Ash, but before talking about him, it’s necessary to get to know Delia better.

Delia is Ash’s mother. The relationship between them is more like that between brother and sister than the one between mother and child, because of the young age when Delia gave birth to Ash.

She is an always-cheerful and full of energy woman. Ash, indeed, inherited his “naughty side” from her. She can also be very strict with her son, especially for what regards politeness

Delia is a bit apprehensive towards Ash. In fact, she always floods him with recommendations and advic, especially for what concerns washing and changing his clothes every day.

Among her passions we can find gardening. Delia is known for her fantastic green fingers, and you can notice that by the beautiful flowers and the vegetables that she grows in her little garden. Beware though, offering yourself help her in the garden could be a big mistake: when Ash was a child, he could not even study because she always ended up assignin him one task after other, endlessly!

Delia is also an excellent cooker.
She managed the restaurant “Pallet House”, which has inherited on the death of her mother.
Every morning Delia leaves the house at dawn to go shopping, then he begins to prepare lunch for guests of the inn: she is very careful to choose healthier and energy foods. That’s because Delia says that lunch is the most important meal of the day and a simple bento is not enough to provide sufficient energy to deal with it.

Delia actually wanted to become a Pokémon trainer, but because of the inn and Ash’s birth she could never leave. So she just studied Pokémon in Prof. Oak’s laboratory, where she met his friend Spencer Hale (as seen in the third movie).

Most people in Pallet Town consider her a natural beauty: in fact, when she was 17, she appeared on the front cover of the new year special issue of “Pokémon Pals” along with a flower Pokémon known as Bellsprout. However she has never told Ash this.

(in-depth analysis about how Delia lived the motherhood of Ash at THIS LINK )

As for Ash’s father, he is a Pokémon Trainer currently traveling in a faraway land. Delia knew him in her inn, when she was 18 and her mother was still alive. He was a traveler and aspiring Pokémon Trainer. The two fell in love and their relationship became rapidly stronger, so that within the same year they got married. When Ash was born, Delia was only 19 years old.

The man, however, left Pallet Town right after Ash’s birth and never came back. For this reason, Delia got very angry and promised herself to ignore Ash’s father even if he came back.

However, over the years, after her husband’s disappearance, Delia received more than a hundred proposals from other men but she refused them all, because she actually never wanted to divorce from Ash’s father. As a matter of fact, despite her bright and cheerful personality, Delia suffers a lot due to her husband’s disappearance. The period of motherhood has been really tough and more than once Delia cried in front of the same Ash, who always managed to console her, despite being only a three-year old child. Nevertheless, Delia has never considered her motherhood as something tough. Thanks to Ash she was not completely alone.

When Ash was a child, he often asked about his father, he was always wondering what he was doing and where he was… but Delia, obviously, wasn’t able to answer to these questions, so she just told Ash how exceptional his dad was as a trainer (even if there was no evidence that he had become really extraordinary, given that she hadn’t heard anything from him) and showed him some photos.

The writers of Pokémon Anime promised to 4Kids that by the fifth season (The Master Quest) would introduce Ash’s father, but as we all know, it’s never happened.

(You can read the complete chapter of one such conversation between Ash and Delia by Shudo’s book at THIS LINK)

Despite the situation, Ash has never been shocked by the absence of his father and this is just thanks to Delia being an extremely positive woman who hates seeing his son sad. For this reason she did her best to make everything appear positive and joyful to him. Fortunately Ash has a very strong character in every respect. As explained by Takeshi Shudo, this derives from the absence of his father. If Ash had known him, probably his personality would be very different.

The night before leaving for his journey, Ash assured Delia that he will not end up like his father. Apart from that, we do not know the exact consideration that Ash currently has of his father. However, it’s true that he always avoids this topic, although his friendsspoke of their fathers in his presence and in several episodes. He’s never mentioned anything about his father. All this indicates that Ash is now very angry with his father, even though he probably hopes to meet him one day.

Ash’s Qualifications and Titles

ita icon_satoshipediaThe first thing that must be remembered of Ash, but which in many, however, tend to forget, is that he, having earned the title of MASTER OF Kanto’s BATTLE FRONTIER, is also the EIGHTH FRONTIER BRAIN of his region, but Ash refused temporarily to fill the role in order to continue his journey. So, actually, he already holds an important title close to that of Pokémon Master, but as we all know, the goal that Ash really want to achieve is the last one.

In the course of his journey, Ash has participated in many tournaments and leagues of any kind. Let’s see what are all the titles he has received, and consequently the number of awards.

Most important titles

Orange League Champion

Pokémon Contests

Ash has also participated at several Pokémon Contests, for fun and to help his friends May and Dawn, although he is not at all prepared for this type of competition, as admitted by the same Ash, whom, being focused on the effectiveness of the moves, tends to forget to present them elegantly.

Despite this, Ash has always carefully observed the Pokémon Contests, from which he’s often able to draw inspiration for some of his most spectacular battle moves (to learn more go to THIS LINK).

Below, here’s Pokémon Contests to which he took part, with all the positions in which he is classified:

Terracotta Town Pokémon Contest Champions
Pokémon Contest in Terracotta Town, in which he won on a par with May (episode: “Home is Where the Start is“, series Battle Frontier)

Wallace Cup Top 8
Wallace Cup, in which he is ranked in the Top 8 (episodio “Pruning a Passel of Pals!“, series DP Battle Dimension)

Note: The series Black & White is not mentioned because it has brought no development to Ash’s character, being a “separate series”, incorrectly connected with the main anime (HERE for clarification).

Ash’s Method of training and fighting style

ita icon_satoshipediaAsh says that he and his Pokemon are like a big family and this affects his training method, based primarily on trust and on encouragement of his Pokémon, in order to develop their strong points.

Many trainers tend to think that in order to strenghten a Pokémon it is necessary to work on his weaknesses, but Ash realized that the best thing is to use the strengths of a Pokémon to cover its weaknesses.

To cite an example: when his Turtwig has evolved into Grotle has not been able to move as fast as before, so Ash helped the Pokemon to change his fighting style, working on the resistance, so that Grotle could have been able to take lumps, rather than dodge them, and then attack at the right time.

Although Ash instills much confidence and positivity to his Pokémon (to the point of being willing to make as target of their moves in order to help them), in training he often becomes severe and intransigent: he doesn’t claim that his Pokémon tire too much or sacrifice themselves in any way, but he demands commitment and will, saying they should never give up and that evolution can never replace a bit of healthy work.

Regarding evolutions, Ash has always been very understanding with his Pokémon: he doesn’t force a Pokémon to evolve, especially if against his will, because he claims that a Pokémon can become very powerful without evolving if trained with patience and love (which is possible in the animated series, being different from the game).

One of the greatest of Ash’s skill is to know how to devise tactics based on the battles of others, and then customize and strengthen them in his own way. A clear example of this is the Counter Shield, Ash’s most important technique, to which he has arrived after having upgraded with time two techniques developed by Dawn: the Spinning and the Ice Aqua Jet.

The Spinning consisted in rotating the Pokémon, a way to avoid elegantly and efficiently the shots. Ash had the idea to strengthen this technique with rotations of different directions, which gave rise to a spectacular battle in the first Sinnoh Gym.

Later, Dawn had the idea to use Ice Beam to transform her Buizel’s Aqua Jet in a ice bullet, but she was never able to reach the desired effect. When Buizel became Ash’s Pokémon (following an exchange with Dawn), he understood that, in order to ensure a successful technique Buizel had to rotate, in this way it was able to complete the move, which has been renamed “Ice Aqua Jet”. The same Dawn said that it was necessary Ash’s ability for the technique to come out.

The last level where Ash brought these rotations is the Counter Shield, a technique entirely created by him which consists of blocking an opponent’s attack by using another one, in order to attack and defend at the same time.

It was originally designed to contrast the gym leader Fantina’s Hypnosis.

Ash got this idea when he saw Lucinda’s Ambipom contrasting Delcatty’s Sing using Double Hit. Then, the boy decided to strengthen this strategy, applying the tactics of the spinning: rotating and simultaneously launching their special attacks, Pokémon would have created a barrier with which they would have blocked the opponents’ moves, and at the same time attack the opponent Pokémon.

During the battle with Fantina, it has been created a situation which led Ash to reveal another characteristic of his Counter Shield: it could block not only Hypnosis, but also other moves, like Dark Pulse. Fantina was taken by surprise… after seeing Ash’s Counter Shield, she decided to make trouble for Ash, lining up on the field its Mismagius, unable to use Hypnosis.

Ash’s motto is “The best way to defend is to attack”, which is reflected, in fact, also in the technique of Counter Shield that he has developed. Ash generally prefer to use the attacks as a defense, rather than dodge, but of course, he is also adept at dodging hits: he always teaches his Pokémon to wait until the last second before dodging a move, in order to surprise their opponents.

Thanks to the original episodes, we can see that Ash is also excellent at physics sciences. He used several times: levers, forces, accelerations and combinations of natural elements to his advantage.

Ash is in fact known to all to be a very skilled strategist.
He’s able to devise sudden strategies, that no one would dare even think, when he is in a critical situation, displacing the opponent who lowers his guard thinking he practically won. Most of these sudden strategies are based on the control of the battle field, that Ash always manages to use to the advantage of his Pokémon
(For example he made Chimchar skate on a piece of ice because he could not move on frozen ground, or use rocks as if they were trees to make quickly move his Treecko, a Pokémon who’s used to move and live in forests).

Regarding to this, Brock said several times that “Ash is a genius at gaining total control of the Battle Field”. This is what makes him unbeatable.

Ash’s strategist skills are also visible in other situations: sometimes he pretends to be in difficulty or have made a mistake and keeps hidden until his Pokémon’s last few techniques, just to let down the opponent’s guard. Ash is extremely crafty during battle, much more than it seems and it is very difficult to deceive him, as said, for example, by the same gym leader Fantina.

One thing that Ash always recommendeds to those who ask him advice about the battles is to keep focused :you should never be distracted and think of something else, but try as much as possible to be in tune with your own Pokémon, in order to understand when it’s pushed to its limits and to be ready for every single situation.

Ash’s Voice Actors

ita icon_satoshipediaAsh’s voice is interpreted by:

Japan: Rica Matsumoto

In Japan, the voice actors are called Seiyuu and they are very important figures, because in Japanese culture it’ss as if they “reincarnated” the characters they dub.

In fact, there is no wonder when Rica is often called “Satoshi Sama” or similar.

Rica, as well as being a talented actress and voice actress, is also a singer, In fact, in addition to having published some of her albums, she sang most of the opening themes of the anime Pokémon impersonating Ash who, in dubbing too, is rendered very well by the masculine voice of Rica.

About Ash, Rica said during an interview: “Satoshi (Ash) always comes up with fun phrases, such as ‘pajama wa jama’ (Japanese pun that more or less means ‘pajamas are a threat’) or jokes. This is what drew me to him as a character. “

Ash dubbed by Rica in the first series:

Ash dubbed by Rica now:

English dub: Veronica Taylor & Sarah Natochenny

Veronyca Taylor has been Ash’s English voice actress for 4Kids Entertainment and has held this role until the series Advanced Battle comprised. From then on she has been replaced by Sarah Natochenny.

Veronica voiced Ash in the first 8 seasons, so she gavea childish voice to the character (despite she tried, as far as possible, to create a more “mature” voice) . With the transition from 4Kids to Pokémon USA, which required a change of voice actors too, the staff decided to give Ash a voice similar to Rica Matsumoto’s one, so the role passed to Sarah Natochenny.

Veronica Taylor was also the voice of Delia (Ash’s Mom) and May, while Sarah Natochenny was also Dawn’s Buneary.

Veronica’s voice while she interprets Ash:

Sarah’s voice while she interprets Ash:

Italy: Davide Garbolino

Italian famous voice actor who interpreted many characters in animated series and movies. Several years ago led “Ciao Ciao” and “Ciao Ciao Mattina”. He is the official voice of Topo Gigio (2005) and Bugs Bunny.

Davidegarbolino

Regarding the Pokémon anime, Davide interprets Ash’s voice since the first series, therefore always, in fact, over the years, he has done an excellent job of recreating the  “growing up voice” of Ash.

He also directed the dubbing of the film “Pokémon The Rise of Darkrai”.

Pokénerd was born in Umbria, Italy, in June 1992. She got so attached to the pokémon anime since the very beginning that she carefully watches every single episode. Ash’s Lovepedia

ita icon_satoshipediaThe creator of the animated series has expressly stated that at present there can be no love affair in the Pokémon Anime, because it would deviate the pattern of the plot. However, it was of course possible that many girls (including Pokémon-girls!) fell in love with Ash because of his personality and his courage, as it has also happened that Ash has had, or at least appears to have had, some small crushes.

Note: this does NOT refer to shipping, but to objective events in the animated series.

Girls and Pokémons who have a crush on Ash

– Misty

The first amongst all is obviously Misty.  Although, for the reasons explained at the beginning of this article, Shudo said that between them there’s not a love affair. However, he did not rule out that Misty could be in love with Ash, because, as he himself explained, even at the beginning of the story she was the age when girls fall in love.
One of the storyboarder of the animated series revealed that Misty and Ash really like each other, but they were too “childish” to realize that. This is made clear by some unequivocal scenes from episodes and movies.

PokéShipping_Proof2i7n5as

In the episode “A date with Delcatty” (Pokémon Chronicles series) a guy asks a date to Misty, however, in the original version (Japanese) Misty responds to love someone else already. Also in the original version of this episode, in the final, Misty wants to go see Ash in Hoenn.

– Melody

Melody is one of the protagonists of the second movie. It is not clear if she actually had a crush on Ash, but judging from some of her behaviours towards him, it probably could be. To avoid any mistake, however, she is included in the list.

– Chikorita/Bayleef

In many ways Pokémons are similar to humans.
Therefore, it is also possible that some of them could fall in love with a human. The case is the current Ash’s Bayleef (for those who still don’t know, it’s a female), who is impressed by the courageous and caring attitudes of his trainer, often showing a lot of jealousy towards him …. especially against Pikachu!

– Latias

Still talking about Pokémons, Latias too (protagonist of the film Pokémon Heroes) has literally shown to have a crush on Ash .  During the course of   the movie,   several times it transformed itself into a human girl
to lure Ash, or to ask for his help, also taking the opportunity to hug him and even kiss him.

– Macy

Macy is a girl who has participated at the Johto League. After being rescued by Ash, she develops a crush on him… lighting up the rage and  jealousy of Misty!

– Anabel

Anabel is one of the strongest Frontier Brains of the Kanto region, due to the way she can communicate with Pokémon, which is  similar to telepathy. Also, she is particularly impressed by Ash’s qualities that we all know about, making her fall in love with him.

– Dawn

Dawn has never openly shown it, perhaps because she actually did not realize it. However, according to several sources (but also judging from some of her behaviours), she seems to have had a crush on Ash, or at least a special admiration for him.

– Angie

Angie took part to the Pokémon Summer Academy in the Sinnoh region. Initially she quarreled and competed with Ash, but after being saved by him a couple of times and after having better understood his character, she too ended up falling in love with him.

– Lyra

Lyra is the female protagonist of Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, who appeared in several episodes of the DP series in occasion of the release of the two games. In one episode she confided to Dawn that she was attracted by Ash.

– Serena

Serena is the female protagonist of the series XY. She met Ash many years before, at the Professor Oak’s Pokémon Summer Camp, in Pallet Town. One day she got lost in the forest and hurt her knee. In that moment she met Ash, who bandaged the wound and encouraged her because she was afraid of not being able to get up. Then Ash pulled Serena up, making her stand on her feet, and she found herself embraced to him.
Then Ash said, “See? You made it!”and took her back to Camp. Of course, Serena immediately  falls in love with the boy, and having found him in the Kalos region, she too decided to travel in order to be with him.

In the last episode of XYZ Serena kisses Ash on the lips. This was confirmed by the director of the series in an interview (Tetsuo Yajima). The scene was made ambiguous because it was not possible to insert it directly in the episode, so there was the idea of using the escalator.

098697

– Miette

Miette is known to be Serena’s love rival. During the episode 26 of the series XY ( A Battle by Any Other Name!) she has repeatedly demonstrated a particular interest for Ash, sparking the anger of Serena;
At the end of the episode Miette advised her to “wake up”, otherwise she would have taken Ash away from her.

Ash’s crushes (probable and actual)

– Misty

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Ash returns feelings only for Misty, to whom he is always very fond of; this is shown by his attitudes and by the way he talks about her to other friends. In addition, Ash is really jealous about the presents she gives him (a handkerchief and Misty’s special lure), not allowing anyone to touch them.

– Giselle

In the episode 9 of the first series (The School of Hard Knocks) Ash met Giselle, the most beautiful girl in the school, for which he developed a crush along with Brock.

– Girls of the Pokémon Circus

Although this is not considered a real “crush”, in the episode “It’s Mr. Mime Time“, (first series), Ash was asked to dress up as a Mr. Mime to help the girls of a circus, who were desperate because their Pokémons didn’t want to work. Ash categorically refused to disguise himself, but as soon as the girls softly re-asked it to him, he blushed and accepted the task, smiling.

– Melody

In the second movie, Ash showed attraction to Melody, setting fire to the jealousy of Misty.

– Bianca

In the movie Pokémon Heroes, Ash saves Latias, who took the form of Bianca that, once out of danger, misteriously disappears. When, later at the museum, he sees Bianca, Ash starts to behave oddly, trying to reach her at all costs, not knowing that, in reality, she wasn’t the girl he previously saved. Ash’s behaviours bring the thought that he could have had a crush on Bianca.

Ash’s Other Outfits

ita icon_satoshipediaMany pokéfan are led to believe that Ash will not ever change clothes or even worse, that he did not wash himself. Well, in the animated series it’s also made clear this thing:

Delia taught Ash to do the laundry before he left, in fact he has got with him the pink gloves useful for this purpose. Also, Ash has repeatedly claimed to have extra T-shirts (that have been seen also in the same animated series), some identical to each other, other slightly different.

Ash has also stated that he takes a shower or bath every day (or at least every time he comes to a Pokémon Center). If he is stuck into a forest or places like these for days, obviously, he has no chance of having a decent wash, but, however, every day he changes his underwear and socks.

Below, here are the different types of Ash’s outfits depending on the situations:

– Coats for cold weather

During his travels, Ash had to go through many different places and in different seasons of the year, so, sometimes he had to go through perennially ice-cold ,or snow covered areas in winter. In these cases he had to wear coats.

 – For training and competitions

Sometimes Ash had the need to wear some costumes and dresses for special trainings or to participate in specific competitions:

– To sleep

Ash hates wearing pajamas. This is characteristic of him since he was a child, when his mother was always angry because he tended to go sleeping without wearing it. In the first series he was wearing pajamas several times, when he was at home or at least in presence of his mother. Instead, during the journey, he always slept with his clothes, removing the jacket and staying in t-shirt and pants (mainly for practical reasons, since it often found himself camping).4786589

Since the half of the Diamond & Pearl series, Ash decided to wear a pair of shorts he bought especially for warm nights.

Currently, in the Kalos region, He decided to use even a tank top, in addition to shorts.
However, as seen at the beginning of article, he also brings different types of t-shirts, with whom he sleeps in cooler nights.67987076

– Swimwears

In the course of the series Ash has been shown to possess many types of swimwear:

– The crazy imitator!

Ash has always been the protagonist of several funny gags, in which he has found himself, against his will, to disguise himself as a Pokémon, food … and even girls!

– Ash the prankster

As we know, Ash is a great prankster, so occasionally he likes to put on masks or absurd disguises to play jokes on his friends… sometimes with Brock as an accomplice!

– Other outfits
