Ash’s Childhood

Ash was a very lively and naughty child, in fact, he loved playing around and cause mischief.
Delia told him off when he caused too much trouble, but she never forced him to focus on his studies.

Ash became rebellious for the first time around the age of three. In order to keep him quiet, Delia often pretended to cry. However, Ash was also a very sweet child. Indeed, on one occasion, it happened that Delia ended up crying for real because she kept thinking that she was a very young, single mother. Once that had happened, Ash immediately stopped making trouble. He approached Delia and by simply asking her < Mommy. What’s wrong? Are you okay?he managed to console her. Ash’s gesture made Delia feel very reassured and as a matter of fact she often felt the need to tell him < Thank you Baby>

Ash attended maternal and primary school in Pallet Town, unlike Gary, who decided to attend an elementary school in the nearby town. Since he’s member of the Oak family, he didn’t want to attend the small primary school of Pallet Town. Every day he had a two hour journey to get to and from school.

Ash could not stand Gary, but at the same time he didn’t give too much weight to his attitudes of superiority, because in a way he was sympathetic towards him: < Gary is a self centered jerk who look down on others just because he’s a member of the Oak family, his lineage is all he have going for him, yet he is still full of himself. However, it must be tough having to live up to your ancestors… >. That’s what Ash thoughtsometimes in regards to Gary.

On the other hand, with a father and grandfather who were complete failures, it’s quite possible that Gary thought that Ash was quite pitiable himself.

Ash and bullying

When bullies picked on Ash in maternal and elementary school, he’d get the teachers or the bully’s father to tell them off. Or well, if the bully’s father wouldn’t tell them off, he’d make sure the teacher did.

The problem of bullying was finally resolved by Delia, who talked to bullies’ fathers and urged them to solve their conjugal problems. Having a happier family, bullies gradually stopped targeting Ash, who could devote himself to his pranks again.

Ash always played alone while having fun with rather dangerous games like climbing trees and  descending from the hills on wooden boards (thanks to these activities he developed a great agility). He also loved fishing and hunting insects.

Despite that, Ash has  claimed many times to hate loneliness, describing it as “very hard” and “a source of suffering”, as if he felt such sensations on his own skin. This makes it clear that in his childhood Ash felt quite alone, although he always hid his sadness. This is also confirmed in the texts of some Japanese theme songs,

Note: For those who don’t know: usually, in the anime series, the lyrics of Japanese theme songs are about the feelings of the characters. In THIS ARTICLE we delved into all Ash’s character and psychological aspects, also taking advantage of them.

Little Ash and his father

Ash has never known his father, except through pictures and stories of his mother Delia, who was constantly inundated with questions about him: “Where is Dad?” “What is he doing now?”. Delia obviously couldn’t answer these questions, so she merely told him that he was an extraordinary Pokémon Trainer, until one day, in which Ash was 5 years old, she has been forced to confess to having told him many lies, because no one had heard anything about Ash’s father, so no one even knew if he actually became a good trainer.

That same day, a computer was given to Ash, through which he could have verified through the internet if his father has been successful as a trainer, but unfortunately he couldn’t find anything.

However Ash was never deeply shocked by his father’s absence, thanks to his strong feelings. This was a relief for Delia. In this regard, as explained by Shudo, probably Ash’s character now would be different if he had known his father.

Given that Delia had always wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, occasionally she murmured: <Ash’s dad and grandpa are still now on a journey somewhere with the aim of becoming a pokemontrainer…How I envy them! >

These words come so many times to Ash’s ears that triggered him a strong desire to become a Pokemon trainer.

Ash and Prof. Oak

Initially, Ash didn’t know much prof. Oak, he had only seen him a few times, at night, while he used to go to the inn of his mother (in which he went ther just to eat pre-cooked meals while reading a book). Ash didn’t have chance to talk with the Prof. just because in that moment, Ash must have been sleeping. As time passed he had the opportunity of knowing him better, because he’s always been a Delia’s close friend and Gary’s grandfather.
The two families spent a lot of time together, also going at the Cinema.

Ash and Serena at Summer Camp

Later, Prof. Oak organized a Pokémon Summer Camp, to which, obviously, Ash participated.
There he meets Serena, a girl he met again in the Kalos region.

Serena fell on the ground and hurt her knee, but then Ash intervened. He tied a handkerchief and gently applied it to her knee and helped her to stand up, accompanying her to the camp, from which she got lost. The little girl was impressed by Ash’s kindness and immediately had a crush on him, but unfortunately, once terminated the camp, she had no way of seeing him again.

tidbit about Ash’s childhood

> As a child when Ash communicating using his computer or tried to put on airs, Ash was referring to himself by the pronoun “boku”, but in general he always says “ore”.

Delia often enlists the help of Ash to do the gardening. However, Delia made Ash work so much that he couldn’t even study.

> In Western versions of the anime, Ash, as a child, was nicknamed “Little Ash”, because of its (still) short stature. This nick was used mostly by Gary (who called him “Ashy-Boy” too) as well as in the first series of the anime, where Team Rocket and Misty used it too (adding other nicknames like “Little Twerp” or “Little Face” etc.)

> Before his departure, Ash has spent 10 days trying to find his characteristic pose of victory (that always accompanies his “Getto Daze”).

Moreover, having planned to start his journey with BulbasaurCharmander o Squirtle, he had thought at some nicknames for these three Pokémon, respectively: DanesukeKagetarou e Zenibou.

Ash’s Family

ita icon_satoshipediaThe only information we have about Ash’s family come from books written by the creator of the animated series Takeshi Shudo (of which is spoken at THIS LINK).

Although Ash’s life has always been very happy, his family situation does not look very goodThe reason for which Ash’s parents are separated is that his father abandoned the family a little while later Ash’s birth, leaving a young 19-year old Delia alone.
As for Ash’s grandparents, it is only know that Delia’s father abandoned the family to become a Pokémon trainer when she was little, while her mother died due to an illness when Delia was pregnant of Ash. Also because of this situation, Ash wants his Pokémon to be a big family: he says that in each episode. This because he wants to enlarge his family in some way (in addition, of course, to want create a climate of solidarity between his pokemon).

In the whole story, the character who arises the most curiosity is the mysterious father of Ash, but before talking about him, it’s necessary to get to know Delia better.

Delia is Ash’s mother. The relationship between them is more like that between brother and sister than the one between mother and child, because of the young age when Delia gave birth to Ash.

She is an always-cheerful and full of energy woman. Ash, indeed, inherited his “naughty side” from her. She can also be very strict with her son, especially for what regards politeness

Delia is a bit apprehensive towards Ash. In fact, she always floods him with recommendations and advic, especially for what concerns washing and changing his clothes every day.

Among her passions we can find gardening. Delia is known for her fantastic green fingers, and you can notice that by the beautiful flowers and the vegetables that she grows in her little garden. Beware though, offering yourself help her in the garden could be a big mistake: when Ash was a child, he could not even study because she always ended up assignin him one task after other, endlessly!

Delia is also an excellent cooker.
She managed the restaurant “Pallet House”, which has inherited on the death of her mother.
Every morning Delia leaves the house at dawn to go shopping, then he begins to prepare lunch for guests of the inn: she is very careful to choose healthier and energy foods. That’s because Delia says that lunch is the most important meal of the day and a simple bento is not enough to provide sufficient energy to deal with it.

Delia actually wanted to become a Pokémon trainer, but because of the inn and Ash’s birth she could never leave. So she just studied Pokémon in Prof. Oak’s laboratory, where she met his friend Spencer Hale (as seen in the third movie).

Most people in Pallet Town consider her a natural beauty: in fact, when she was 17, she appeared on the front cover of the new year special issue of “Pokémon Pals” along with a flower Pokémon known as Bellsprout. However she has never told Ash this.

(in-depth analysis about how Delia lived the motherhood of Ash at THIS LINK )

As for Ash’s father, he is a Pokémon Trainer currently traveling in a faraway land. Delia knew him in her inn, when she was 18 and her mother was still alive. He was a traveler and aspiring Pokémon Trainer. The two fell in love and their relationship became rapidly stronger, so that within the same year they got married. When Ash was born, Delia was only 19 years old.

The man, however, left Pallet Town right after Ash’s birth and never came back. For this reason, Delia got very angry and promised herself to ignore Ash’s father even if he came back.

However, over the years, after her husband’s disappearance, Delia received more than a hundred proposals from other men but she refused them all, because she actually never wanted to divorce from Ash’s father. As a matter of fact, despite her bright and cheerful personality, Delia suffers a lot due to her husband’s disappearance. The period of motherhood has been really tough and more than once Delia cried in front of the same Ash, who always managed to console her, despite being only a three-year old child. Nevertheless, Delia has never considered her motherhood as something tough. Thanks to Ash she was not completely alone.

When Ash was a child, he often asked about his father, he was always wondering what he was doing and where he was… but Delia, obviously, wasn’t able to answer to these questions, so she just told Ash how exceptional his dad was as a trainer (even if there was no evidence that he had become really extraordinary, given that she hadn’t heard anything from him) and showed him some photos.

The writers of Pokémon Anime promised to 4Kids that by the fifth season (The Master Quest) would introduce Ash’s father, but as we all know, it’s never happened.

(You can read the complete chapter of one such conversation between Ash and Delia by Shudo’s book at THIS LINK)

Despite the situation, Ash has never been shocked by the absence of his father and this is just thanks to Delia being an extremely positive woman who hates seeing his son sad. For this reason she did her best to make everything appear positive and joyful to him. Fortunately Ash has a very strong character in every respect. As explained by Takeshi Shudo, this derives from the absence of his father. If Ash had known him, probably his personality would be very different.

The night before leaving for his journey, Ash assured Delia that he will not end up like his father. Apart from that, we do not know the exact consideration that Ash currently has of his father. However, it’s true that he always avoids this topic, although his friendsspoke of their fathers in his presence and in several episodes. He’s never mentioned anything about his father. All this indicates that Ash is now very angry with his father, even though he probably hopes to meet him one day.
