Focus: Ash’s psychological profile

ita icon_satoshipediaIn the article “Ash’s sunny and positive personality” we talked in detail of what distinguishes Ash Ketchum: his gentle, emphatetic and positive character. However, his psychological profile needs to be illustrated in a more accurate way, by specifically talking of all the aspects that charaterize him. To do this, it is also useful to make use of the the japanese theme songs lyrics of the Pokémon anime.

The lyrics of the theme songs in Japan are structured in a different way than ours, and this is what makes them more appreciated: in fact, they focus on the emotions and  feelings of the protagonists.

Therefore, examining the lyrics of the pokémon anime theme songs, in particular those sang by Rica Matsumoto (Ash’s japanese voice, that performs the theme songs always by putting herself in Ash’s shoes), a quite interesting context about Ash’s psychology emerges, even if it was already deductible from the episodes. All the quotes you’ll read in this section are from the theme songs.

As we all know, Ash is presented as a very particukiuyhfgyylar guy: with a noble soul, kind, positive and sweet if needed. He demonstrates a remarkable wisdom on how to face life and it’s difficulties, in fact he is a reference point for all of his friends, that consider him a sort of psycologist of the group and use his teachings  to overcome their insecurities.

“Courage is the key that opens doors
We always had it on our hands”
(Challenger – Opening 7 )

“Through tears and smiles, you’re not alone
I will always and forever cheer you up!”
(Spurt – Opening 10)
“I want to help, I want to protect you during painful times”
(Challenger – Opening 7)
“OK! Let’s swallow our fear!”
(Ok – Opening 3)

“Pinches and chances are different sides of a coin”

I can feel it
(The Rivals – Opening 2)

vlcsnap-2015-11-11-23h23m13s601

Basically, Ash is sweet and kind, but at the same time he is bold and determined.

Another of Ash’s famous characteristic is his stamina. He often receives attacks from confused Pokémons or act as a shield to protect his friends and, if he gets injured, he never stops and continues undeterred to help, even at the cost of losing his life.vlcsnap-2015-11-12-00h33m02s414

Ash never complains too much for pain, if he does, it means he is feeling really bad, like in the episodes vlcsnap-2015-11-12-01h41m26s3478The Stun Spore Detour (Adventures in the Orange Islands series), A Better Pill to Swallow (Johto League Champions series) and “Battling at Full Volume!” (Series XYZ). Generally, if he is not feeling well, as  not worry those who are with him, he tends to downplay the problem, saying that everything is fine, even though in reality it isn’t.

“There are salty tears on my cheeks, but
Shedding them will make me strong
I’ll forget my pain and scratches
But not my important memories”
(Challenger – Opening 7)

However, since Ash’s personality is so good-natured and reassuring, no one would expect him to become hateful and surly, though there are some cases in which Ash reveales an unexpected side of his character, which may stun not only his travelling companions, but also the audience.

vlcsnap-2015-08-23-17h14m54s720Ash actually always keeps everything bottled up, he never wants to talk about his problems and if someone insists so as to persuade him to do that, he always ends up getting angry. When Ash is really sad, nervous or worried for something (especially for Pikachu, but also for all of his other Pokémons), he may become unrecognizably grumpy, sour and unpleasant (like Misty, May and Dawn defined him sometimes) to the point of becoming offensive or being quite rude. In these cases, even speaking to him could cause a bad reaction frovlcsnap-2015-08-23-17h12m35s948m him. For this reason Brock, knowing Ash very well, sometimes had to stop those who tried to speak to him, to calm him down or even worse, to scold him.
In such cases Ash needs to stay alone, the only ones who can approach him are his Pokémons.vlcsnap-2015-08-23-16h24m21s053

Generally, in this way he calms down and his friends can take over.
In some rare occasions Ash got to the points of talking back even to Brock, who he respects and thinks highly of. In the episode vlcsnap-2015-08-23-16h23m31s430On a Wingull and a Prayer! (Advanced series) Ash, nervous for having lost the ferry to Dewfor Town, addressed May in a very sour way. The girl didn’t expect such a reaction from Ash and took it badly.

In episodes “All Hail the Ice Battlefield! and “Seeing the Forest for the Trees!” of the XYZ series, Ash has once again had a moment of crisis, and as usual he asked to be left alone. But Serena, worried about him, is still gone to look for him and has considerately tried to cheer him up. However, as we all know, Ash in these moments is unapproachable and obviously he is  turned against Serena in a decidedly stern way.

800709

Serena, not expecting such a behavior by Ash, is burst into tears and began throwing snowballs on him, reproaching him to not recognize him anymore. This act has come to help Ash to find himself.

4364

Note that Ash’s character improved over the years.  In the first series he was often very arrogant, but as the years went by he matured and became generally kind and thoughtful, as we know him now. In fact, in the recent episodes it is quite rare to see him get nervous and talk back to his friends. Particularly in the XY series, Ash demonstrates to be more patient even with who is a first-time trainer and instead of getting angry (as he did with Dawn at the beginning of the Diamond&Pearl series) he prefers to make reproaches for greater good.

Here is a little fun fact: in the Japanese version of the first series, Ash was often very obnoxious towards Misty. Most of the time she rebuked him or just tried to give him some advice, Ash replied to her: “urusai na” (term used in Japan to silence someone), but in the Western version of the episodes, most of these dialogues have been totally changed or even removed.

vlcsnap-2015-11-11-23h26m32s963Ash is very impulsive. As a matter of fact, if he is nervous or in a bad mood he tends to lose his temper easily. However, at the same time, he can be very patient.
Let’s take Paul as an example, that is Ash’s rival in the Diamond&Pearl series.
Although Paul often insulted him, Ash has always been kind to him. Obviously, on those occasions, Ash firstly came up with a retort and knew how to be respected. However, shortly after he always tried to make some kind of friendship with him.
So many times Paul insulted him, as often as Ash tried to be kind to him. This is a fe213iopature of Ash that emphasizes his personality.

Ash also tends to be much more patient with those who are constantly kind to him, as if he perceives that in some cases his bad reaction might particularly offend the person next to him.

Talking about perception, Ash is particularly well known for his empathy. It is in fact possible to notice from the episodes that he has some sort of “sixth sense” thanks to which he is able to understand immediately if someone is sad or demoralized. For example, in the episode Team shocker! (DP Battle Dimension series) Dawn, deeply disappointed for her defeat at the Solaceon Town Pokémon Contest, nervously tightens her fists. Ash immediately notices  and realizes that in fact something is wrong, although the girl said she was fine. Ash_Dawn_angry

Even though Ash is totally naive about love matters, he understands when someone cares particularly for him.
To cite another example: in Serena’s case, Ash obviously hasn’t understood that she is in love with him; however he understands or realizes that their friendship really matters to her. This is why Ash adopts many caring attitudes towards her, like XY059_clip2paying compliments or giving her gifts, as seen in the episode “Under the Pledging Tree!” ( XY Kalos Quest series). Serena is obviously the most present among the girls who openly demonstrate their love for Ash, so it’s easier to to take her as an example, but Ash has shown similar attitudes with other girls in love with him (such as Miette, Melody, Lyra, Macy and so on).

Ash also revealed that he can understand the feelings of his Pokémons, as if he feels the same thing they do (to quote his exact words).

“Strength, kindness, dazzling smiles
With my heart’s map, I’ll look for them”
(Challenger – Opening  7)

Moving on, Ash is famous for being really stubborn and this is the main characteristic for which they all know him. Resolute and determined, his motto is “Saigo made Akirameru Na” (literally: “don’t give up until it’s over“), so overflowing with optimism that for him it comes quite natural to transmit it to others and encourage those in need.

I’m tightly grabbing your hand and taking you along
(Ready Go – Opening 5)
“I thirst, I’m hunger
Even so, my strenght is boiling up
My wounds throb, my sweat flies
But I can see clearly
[…]
The forest is dark, there are no roads
Even so, my courage is overflowing
The mountains are tall, the valleys are deep
But of course, I’m all fired up!
[..]
I’ll tightly tie my shoelaces
I’ll fulfill the promise to my future self!”
(Spurt – Opening 10)

vlcsnap-2015-11-12-00h26m37s097

“If I keep walking on my tired feet
I’ll be a step closer to my dream”
(Challenger – Opening 7)

Does Ash ever have weak moments? The answer is yes.  Anybody could be demotivated after disappointments and  failures, Ash too.

“Do you remember who won?”
Now look!
I can laugh as I talk with you
“I forgot!” said while playing dumb
(The Rivals – Opening  2)

vlcsnap-2015-11-12-00h22m30s459As stated in the japanese theme songs,  Ash forces himself to always be positive and determined, because he actually hides some insecurities inside himself, as shown in some episodes when Ash loses his confidence apparently for no reason. An example can be found in the episode “A Dairy Tale Ending” (Johto League Champions series) where after being defeatet for the first time by Whitney, Ash thought of giving all up and going back home.

“Though I had begun to give up
There was no reason for me to
The morning sun burning brightly on my journey
Asks me, “That much is fine, right?”

(Ok – Opening 3)
I’ll pack up my eagerness and energy
Today, too, I swear!
[…]
I can’t turn around it, I can’t lie down
I can’t get depressed, I can’t give up, I believe
I won’t rush, I won’t get confused, I’ll always
Aim for that distant dream…
(Challenger – Opening 7)

vlcsnap-2015-11-12-00h24m53s289

As already stated in the article “Ash’s sunny and positive personality“, in the DP there’s a character who really mines Ash’s positivity: Paul.

Paul is a trainer with very cold methods, severe and intransigent. vlcsnap-2015-11-12-01h04m02s062He treated his pokémon with extreme strictness. Ash oblivously was completely against these methods, because he knows well that Pokémons must be treated with kindness. Therefore he firstly faced Paul with a confident attitude, to make him understand that… but Ash continued to lose against him. After the hard defeat at the Lake Acuity, Ash literally had a breakdown  and starteddp 59 to ask himself if perhaps he was doing it all wrong. The shots that do not show Ash’s face for the rest of the episode “Evolving Strategies!” (DP Galactic Battles series) emphasize his mood in that moment.   Luckily, as we all know, Ash never decided to give up, eventually managing to make Paul more gentle towards his Pokémons.

“It’s so disappointing to lose
I’m trembling, but,
My clenched fist loosens
I wipe the sweat on my jeans, let’s shake hands!”
(The Rivals – Opening 2)

vlcsnap-2015-11-11-22h31m12s417

“I’m so happy to win
I want to cry, but
Both winning and losing are important
There must be something to it!”
(The Rivals – Opening 2)

Ash tends to lose his confidence when he feels lonely.2yufz2g.jpg
Although he spent his childhood playing on his own, he lets slip that he hates solitude. He defines it”Very hard” and “the cause of suffering”, describing  it like he experienced that on his own skin. That makes us understand that he felt really lonely even if, as always, he never made it obvious.

“When i look back on yesterday, stopped and retreated;
there were tears, but i don’t care
I’ll take a step towards the future
[..]
There will be no time for gloom, as that would repeat the past
(Ready Go – Opening 5)

hlopgi

“Even though I have memories
Of a few painful things
I don’t even notice as they fall out
from a hole in my backpack”
(Type:Wild – Ending 5)

The lyrics that you have just read may also refer to the moment when Ash saw his mother crying because of their family situation.

At the end of the Johto saga (after the first separation from Misty and Brock) Ash was really sad, so Pikachu made him understand that he’ll never be alone again, and that he had it, his best friend, by his side.skuql5.jpg

Loneliness is a recurrent theme in the japanese lyrics. It is from those, and also from some episodes, that it becomes particularly clear that Ash is scared and hurt by it.

“I’m not alone, I’m not lonely, still a way to go”
(Challenger – Opening 7)

vlcsnap-2015-11-12-00h23m28s795

“The words of my friends, look,
They’re more reassuring than I thought!
They’re extremely warm, so much it makes me cry
(Spurt – Opening 10)

Let’s end the section with some things that anger Ash.

He is unlikely to lose his temper; it only happened  a few times (actually scaring his friends) but never became hysteric.vlcsnap-2015-11-12-01h09m50s993 The only case could be in the episode “Ignorance is Blissey” (Always Pokémon series), in which the Team Rocket stole some food from the Pokémon Center when Ash was fasting since the day before (Misty made the comment: “he never gets this mad“). With the exception of these gags, his biggest rage fit was with Lucario in the movie “Lucario and the Mistery of Mew“, or when he punched a window in the episode “A Frenzied Factory Fiasco!” (XY Kalos Quest series). Ash explained several times what are the things that make him angry or, as he says, “enrage him”. Some examples are the ones mentioned down here:

– Finding out about people who steal or exploit their Pokémon for money or shady dealings.
– Being too far off Pikachu, especially if he’s worried about it.
– Know-it-alls
– Stealing his food

About LD3005

LD3005 is an italian boy, born in 2000, with a strong passion for the Pokéworld and music. He has a radiant and cheerful personality. Main composer and arranger of the Hoseki Team, he's leader of its own RPG project, Pokémon Legends Arise, set in Sinnoh. He made a big effort to translate the Satoshipedia.

Focus- Ash’s sunny and positive personality

ita icon_satoshipedia The gift of infusing courage and happiness

Ash is extremely stubborn and brave: these are the two features that distinguish him more than any other. When he sticks to do something or to achieve a certain goal, nothing and nobody can stop him, also because, thanks to his courage, he manages to overcome every type of fear, especially when he has to help someone who is in trouble or in danger.

Since he was a child, his motto has always been “Saigo made akirameru na” (literally: “Don’t give up until it’s over”  and it doesn’t refer only to Pokémon Battles, but, above all, to life. Untitled-1Ash always repeats this to his friends, especially to those who don’t want to face difficulties, ecouraging them to try and stick to their guns. Then, he usually says: “See? You made it, didn’t you?”

All these characteristics lead him to always be  sunny and positive, ygtoiyuil so much that he becomes able to infuse bravery, confidence, and joy to those around him.
This also because Ash, thanks to his empathy, has the extraordinary gift of always finding the right words to say and cheer up those who feel sad or discouraged. Actually, in his group of friends, he always covers the role of “psychologist” and encourager: every time someone has a Ash_Dawn_angryproblem, he immediately notices, as a sorts of a sixth sense. Then, without a second thought, he sits next to them and after asking what’s wrong, he helps them find a solution.

Ash_Friendship

Daijobu: That’s OK!

Ash often uses the word “Daijobu!” which traslates to: “everything is OK!”, even if he’s the one to get hurt, so as not to worry those who are beside him, smiling and saying everything’s all right, even if it isn’t true.

Ash has super strong feelings, and thanks to this extraordinary characteristic, nothing can scare him, as stated in the books written by Takeshi Shudo (the creator of the Anime): even the absence of his father couldn’t shock him (which made Delia feel really relieved). Shudo also explains that probably Ash’s Character now would be different if he had known his father.

Obviously, like everyone, Ash has got problems and insecurities. This was both revealed in some verses of the Japanese theme song (“[…] I smile, but with some tears […], or […] Even though I have memories of a  few painful things I don’t even notice them, as if they fell from a hole in my backpack […]) and by Ash himself on some occasions in the episodes. However Ash, in order not to worry the people who travels with him, doesn’t manifest his worries and always keeps smiling.

For example, Ash  hates  loneliness, presumably because he spent his childhood playing on his own. When he is alone, in fact, he tends to sadden.

It happened a few times that Ash got heavily demotivated as a result of bad defeats. The first time was when he lost the battle of the Indigo league. It was his first time there and he was so disappointed he hid in his room, not wanting to eat anything. As always, fortunately, these bad moments don’t last long thanks to the support of his friends.

The second time was in the episode: “Evolving strategies!” of the DP Galactic Battles series, when he got heavily defeated by Paul in the battle organized by Reggie. Though he wouldn’t admit it, Ash was slightly intimidated by Paul.
In fact, every time Ash battled against him or in his presence, he lost his head, ending up being defeated. This time Ash was very confident in defeating Paul in that battle at Lake Acuity and prove him that Pokémons can become even stronger if you treat them with kindness.
Ash couldn’t focus properly on the battle and he suffered a devastating defeat 4 – 0, that demotivated him to the point of closing himsels off. Ash’s mood has been accentuated by the frames in which Ash’s eyes are not shown during the whole final of the episode.

Obviously Ash has recovered his usual cheerful mood, even if (in the rest of the DP series), he tended to be concerned or saddened every time someone mentioned Paul, until the episode in which Ash defeats him.

Ash’s gentle nature

Although Ash is extremely brave and often proves to be very severe in his role as a trainer, he normally has a kind, gentle and caring personality. These are features that are not often seen in boys, and this makes him even more special on a humane level to such an extent that his fans have considered him much more than the simple character of an animated series.

This side of Ash’s character comes out even in his work with his Pokémons. In his opinion, the Pokémon team must be a big family and he says it constantly, creating an atmosphere of happiness and solidarity. This method has found application during Chimchar’s training: a very shy and insecure Pokémon, who couldn’t do its best because of Paul’s intimidating and rigid nature, but once it joined Ash’s team, who always praised and reassured it, the little Pokémon, thanks to the love of his trainer, became increasingly stronger. It evolved into Monferno, then into Infernape, and then, in his final battle, it managed to defeat the one who frightened and scared it the most.

Focus – How Ash has changed and matured over the years

ita icon_satoshipedia(Important: To better understand this article it’s necessary for you to read the one concerning the various ages of Ash, at THIS LINK)

Over the years and with the progress of the story, we can objectively observe a mental and physical growth concerning Ash, and this is an established fact.

Watching the episodes is impossible to not notice that in the first series Ash had a totally different behavior from now, which is now unequivocally more mature.
For example, in the early seasons Ash often brags about small successes and had a childish arrogance, but now, since he’s matured, he doesn’t even think to behave in this way and he even scolds (in his own way ) those who make this mistake.
Ash’s way of reasoning and his way of relating to the others are also visibly changed from the first series, and this was undoubtedly noticed by those who have always followed the anime assiduosly. In fact, the book “The Japanification of Children’s Popular Culture” emphasized Ash’s growth and development as the anime series progressed.

Let’s see specifically how Ash has changed over the years.

Ash in the first series

In the first series, Ash had just started his journey. Even though he was only at the beginning of his trainer career and he never put an effort in studying Pokémon when he was at school, he showed a good knowledge of the attacks that every pokemon was able to use, and you can easily see his talent for Pokémon Battles, although it was still immature and needed to properly develope his ability, since Ash was still clumsy and inexperienced; because of this, in Pokémon Battles, he always needed Misty’s and Brock’s suggestions. Even in his first tournament of the Pokémon League they sat on the sideline as assistants. Ash’s behaviors were obviously childish, and in fact, after every success he tended to become conceited (often becoming quite obnoxious) and euphoric. When he doesn’t act as a vain boy, he is quite cute.
Ash has always been a nice and polite guy, however, he always said what he thought and that made him sincere, but somewhat cheeky.

At that time, he was also very spiteful, especially towards Misty who often did not appreciate his humor at all. He kept his particular feature with him: being a prankster is part of his own personality but, of course, it’s not as obvious as when he was a child.

The courage, of course, is a quality he always had, although in the first series he was a little crybaby and, though he did not want to admit it, he was terrified of spectral and ghostly places.

Ash in the series of Orange and Johto

In the Orange League we can start seeing a little maturity in his attitudes, although occasionally he continued adopting conceited behaviors (this is until the “Battle Advanced” series).

In the Johto saga, in his favor there’s the fact that he actually matured as a trainer: In fact, it is from this point in time that his talent as a strategist comes out, proving to be very able to get out of critical situations using his now famous sudden strategies (in depth analysis on THIS LINK) which in most cases were based on the exploitation of the battle field.

During the Johto League, Misty and Brock continued to sit on the sideline as assistants, but they stopped giving advices to Ash, since he proved to no longer need them.

Regarding his character, he also started to consolidate its sweetness, visible especially in respect to his pokémon, which he lovingly cuddled and comforted especially if sad or frightened. He won his Chikorita’s love (currently Bayleef) that in many cases was also assuming attitudes of jealousy towards Ash.

During this series the fights between Ash and Misty also started to decrease.
In fact Ash, especially in the second half of this saga, has become sweet and cute even towards Misty (and of course vice versa), until he reached the apex, in the episode in which they separate.

Ash in the Advanced saga

After finally having defeated Gary and after saying goodbye to the friends who accompanied him on his journey until Johto, Ash looked slightly bewildered, because from that moment on, he would have to go on by his own, but being extremely positive, he took the opportunity for what he considered a new beginning: he left home all of his Pokémon except for Pikachu and departed towards the Hoenn region, in order to start a new adventure, but this time, all on his own.

Once arrived in the new region, Ash’s new traveling companion has become May, a novice trainer initially very awkward and clumsy.

In fact, from this series on, Ash began to assume the role of veteran trainer (although at first a little insecurely), helping  May with advices and instructions about the lives of Pokémon trainers: role previously held by Misty and Brock towards Ash. In the middle of this third generation, Ash has finally stopped taking conceited attitudes, even giving May wise adviced, who suddenly, in the series, started to take the same behaviors.

Once May has become an expert coordinator, she expressed her gratitude to Ash for all the things he teached to her.

As for Ash’s talent on Pokémon battles in this generation, as already mentioned, he became much more mature and expert, his Pokémon battles became truly immersive and his skills as a strategist have gradually consolidated, bringing him, at the end of the Battle Frontier series, to earn the title of Battle Frontier Master.

During the series Battle Frontier, because of the change from 4Kids to Pokémon USA, Ash’s voice has changed from Veronica Taylor to Sarah Natochenny. The latter was chosen because she has a voice much like that of Rica Matsumoto (Japanese Ash’s voice actress), but more mature (although female) and better suited to the current Ash, since he is no longer a child.

Ash in the Diamond & Pearl Saga

The DP series has represented the apex of Ash’s growth as a person and as a trainer. Here, too, he has had to deal with a novice trainer (or precisely a coordinator): Dawn, which immediately showed a lot of admiration for Ash, thanks to his skill as a trainer and for his gentle and reassuring personality.

Dawn often tended to become demoralized, but Ash promptly intervened trying to reassure her and to instill her a bunch of self-confidence.
He also helped her in her trainings. After Dawn succeeded in developing an ingenious technique to use in Contests, based on the rotation of her Pokémon, Ash gave her Ash_Dawn_High_Fivefurther proof of his experience, using himself this technique, but strengthening it over time with different variants and bringing it to a higher level, transforming it into a brilliant Countershield.
In this series, in fact, Ash has also become an expert in the creation of new battling techniques.Ash’s attitudes in this generation are very mature (although occasionally his “playful side” continues to come out) and this is also reflected on his work with Pokémon, with whom often turned out to be very severe, but at the same time sweet, especially against the more timid Pokémon. This kindness with Pokémon put him in collision with Paul, a very rigid trainer, whose attitudes were the exact opposite of those of Ash, but in the end, after the most spectacular battle he ever fought, Ash has put into practice all his experience, managing to defeat Paul and making him more friendly towards pokémon.

Ash in XY Series

The XY series is considered in all respects a sequel of Diamond & Pearl, because there we find an Ash Ketchum mature again and at the same level where we had left him in that series. That level, in the course of history was even exceeded.
It is not a case, in fact, if in the course of the XY series were included very often statements of the protagonists referring to thereturn of the TRUE Ash(Show us what the real Ash can do” “here is the real Ash” etc.).

In this series Ash travels with Serena, Clemont and Bonnie. All of them consider Ash a reference point and a special person. They have a lot of admiration for him, and often make use of his advices to deal with life and its difficulties. Serena in particular is in love with Ash since they were children. On that occasion, Ash helped her after she had lost in a forest.

Translation: Ash drags the other, he is full of vitality and always cheerful. He is positive and does not give up in the face of adversity. In every situation he grits his teeth and goes on!

Regarding the physical aspect, Ash’s current height is 5’05” (1 meter and 65 centimeters tall).  In some scenes it might be a bit disproportionate because, as  explained in this Bulbapedia’s article, the anime’s drawers almost never comply with the proportions between Pokemon and characters.

Despite Ash’s height should be a little ambiguous to allow everyone to identify with him, in the episodes it was also possible to note a stature growth.

growup

vlcsnap-2015-03-16-23h58m32s54

The official proportions of the characters confirm that, in the first series, Ash’s stature was actually the one represented in the examples you have just seen; while in the most recent episodes, Ash is always higher than the first series.

Height Chart_Original series

In this regard, it is also a fact that in the series XY, new trainers as Shauna, Trevor, Mairin and Sawyer are all visibly smaller than Ash. As you know, a professor is not allowed to give the first Pokémon to a child under 10 years.

 Senza titolo-1

We also observe how the same drawer has developed Ash’s features in time through these images:

Ash_change

For consistency, all the images you just seen are by Masaaki Iwane, the best animation director in Pokémon Anime, which makes the most fluid and realistic designs. However you have to take into account that there are many other designers, each with his own style some more realistic and some less.

The first amongst all is obviously Misty.  Although, for the reasons explained at the beginning of this article, Shudo said that between them there’s not a love affair. However, he did not rule out that Misty could be in love with Ash, because, as he himself explained, even at the beginning of the story she was the age when girls fall in love.
One of the storyboarder of the animated series revealed that Misty and Ash really like each other, but they were too “childish” to realize that. This is made clear by some unequivocal scenes from episodes and movies.

In the episode “A date with Delcatty” (Pokémon Chronicles series) a guy asks a date to Misty, however, in the original version (Japanese) Misty responds to love someone else already. Also in the original version of this episode, in the final, Misty wants to go see Ash in Hoenn.

– Melody

Melody is one of the protagonists of the second movie. It is not clear if she actually had a crush on Ash, but judging from some of her behaviours towards him, it probably could be. To avoid any mistake, however, she is included in the list.

– Chikorita/Bayleef

In many ways Pokémons are similar to humans.
Therefore, it is also possible that some of them could fall in love with a human. The case is the current Ash’s Bayleef (for those who still don’t know, it’s a female), who is impressed by the courageous and caring attitudes of his trainer, often showing a lot of jealousy towards him …. especially against Pikachu!

– Latias

Still talking about Pokémons, Latias too (protagonist of the film Pokémon Heroes) has literally shown to have a crush on Ash .  During the course of   the movie,   several times it transformed itself into a human girl
to lure Ash, or to ask for his help, also taking the opportunity to hug him and even kiss him.

– Macy

Macy is a girl who has participated at the Johto League. After being rescued by Ash, she develops a crush on him… lighting up the rage and  jealousy of Misty!

– Anabel

Anabel is one of the strongest Frontier Brains of the Kanto region, due to the way she can communicate with Pokémon, which is  similar to telepathy. Also, she is particularly impressed by Ash’s qualities that we all know about, making her fall in love with him.

– Dawn

Dawn has never openly shown it, perhaps because she actually did not realize it. However, according to several sources (but also judging from some of her behaviours), she seems to have had a crush on Ash, or at least a special admiration for him.

– Angie

Angie took part to the Pokémon Summer Academy in the Sinnoh region. Initially she quarreled and competed with Ash, but after being saved by him a couple of times and after having better understood his character, she too ended up falling in love with him.

– Lyra

Lyra is the female protagonist of Pokémon Heart Gold & Soul Silver, who appeared in several episodes of the DP series in occasion of the release of the two games. In one episode she confided to Dawn that she was attracted by Ash.

– Serena

Serena is the female protagonist of the series XY. She met Ash many years before, at the Professor Oak’s Pokémon Summer Camp, in Pallet Town. One day she got lost in the forest and hurt her knee. In that moment she met Ash, who bandaged the wound and encouraged her because she was afraid of not being able to get up. Then Ash pulled Serena up, making her stand on her feet, and she found herself embraced to him.
Then Ash said, “See? You made it!”and took her back to Camp. Of course, Serena immediately  falls in love with the boy, and having found him in the Kalos region, she too decided to travel in order to be with him.

In the last episode of XYZ Serena kisses Ash on the lips. This was confirmed by the director of the series in an interview (Tetsuo Yajima). The scene was made ambiguous because it was not possible to insert it directly in the episode, so there was the idea of using the escalator.

– Miette

Miette is known to be Serena’s love rival. During the episode 26 of the series XY ( A Battle by Any Other Name!) she has repeatedly demonstrated a particular interest for Ash, sparking the anger of Serena;
At the end of the episode Miette advised her to “wake up”, otherwise she would have taken Ash away from her.

Ash’s crushes (probable and actual)

– Misty

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, Ash returns feelings only for Misty, to whom he is always very fond of; this is shown by his attitudes and by the way he talks about her to other friends. In addition, Ash is really jealous about the presents she gives him (a handkerchief and Misty’s special lure), not allowing anyone to touch them.

– Giselle

In the episode 9 of the first series (The School of Hard Knocks) Ash met Giselle, the most beautiful girl in the school, for which he developed a crush along with Brock.

– Girls of the Pokémon Circus

Although this is not considered a real “crush”, in the episode “It’s Mr. Mime Time“, (first series), Ash was asked to dress up as a Mr. Mime to help the girls of a circus, who were desperate because their Pokémons didn’t want to work. Ash categorically refused to disguise himself, but as soon as the girls softly re-asked it to him, he blushed and accepted the task, smiling.

– Melody

In the second movie, Ash showed attraction to Melody, setting fire to the jealousy of Misty.

– Bianca

In the movie Pokémon Heroes, Ash saves Latias, who took the form of Bianca that, once out of danger, misteriously disappears. When, later at the museum, he sees Bianca, Ash starts to behave oddly, trying to reach her at all costs, not knowing that, in reality, she wasn’t the girl he previously saved. Ash’s behaviours bring the thought that he could have had a crush on Bianca.
