Quirks and special qualities of Ash Ketchum

ita icon_satoshipedia

Everybody knows Ash Ketchum as a skillful Pokémon trainer, but the Pokémon anime has also shown his innate peculiarities and quirks several times.

The Chosen One (Pokémon: The Movie 2000)

In this movie we find out that Ash is the chosen one of an ancient prophecy of the Shamouti Island. It recites, amongst the many verses: “A Great controller shall calm the God’s anger“. 690809

Intially, when all the inhabitants were celebrating, unaware of the imminent tragedy, Ash is elected as ‘chosen’ simply because of his abilities as a trainer (he can “control” his Pokémons, as old Tobias said). During the festival Ash was asked to demonstrate that he was the chosen one by a ritual, that consisted in collecting three treasures located in some small temples consecreted to the three Legendary Birds: in the Fire Islands, Ice Islands and Lightning Islands.7909789
Ash found two of the three treasures by accident and managed to take those away. This showed that he really was the chosen one, the only one to find the last treasure and save the world.
In our version the prophecy refers to him because of the name “Ash”. In the english version the prophecy actually says “Thus the Earth shall turn to Ash”.

Aura Guardian

In the eighth movie “Lucario and the Mystery of Mew” we find out that Ash has a particular gift: he has the same Aura as Lucario.

There are some special people in the Pokémon world that have a well developed Aura, like Lucario’s. In a distant time, these people were called “Aura Guardians“.

Aura is an energy emitted by every living thing; in japanese is also called “Ki“. Aura Guardians can sense it, and with the right training, control it.589087

As far as Ash is concerned, many episodes show he has this ability.57809 For example in the episodes “Pokémon Ranger and the Kidnapped Riolu” Ash could locate and comunicate with Riolu (Lucario’s pre-evolution), anywhere it was thanks to the aura. His ability has proven useful to Ranger Kellyn in order to rescue the Pokémon.

In the episode “The Keystone Pops!” Ash saves a village from the fury of a Spiritomb. A locald elderly woman states that Ash is a Aura Guardian, like the hero that saved the village centuries ago from the same Spiritomb. Ash then answers that he only wants to become a Pokémon Master and he’s not interestes in training his aura.66089

King of the Sea

In the movie “Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea” Ash is elected King of the Sea because he saved the temple by putting the Sea Crown in its place. 6777790The legend (in the original version of the movie) says: “Thee who holds the Sea Crown shall become the true King of the Sea ” so, because Ash has protected the crown he has also become its owner. He has also used it in order to save his friends from the threat represented by Phantom.6789

Ash, The Being of Willpower

In Diamond & Parl series it turns out that Ash, Dawn and Brock are connected to three pokémon: Azelf, Mesprit and Uxie. They are respectively defined as The Being of Willpower“, “The Being of Emotion” and “The Being of Knowledge“. Moreover, these beings perfectly reflecting the personality of the three trainers aforementioned.43536

Azelf chose to connect to Ash because he has always used his strong willpower to protect Pokémon.
There is a strong bond between the two. As a matter of fact, Ash is able to feel the pain of Azelf. The latter, instead, can contact Ash in his dreams and can even “summon” him, teleporting him everytime it needed him.001

Ash encountered Azelf for the first time in the episode “Pruning a Passel of Pals!“. 7455486Unable to sleep, he decided to take a walk at Lake Valor and once being there, as previously happened to Dawn, he saw the spirit of Azelf which came out of the water and then dove back.
It wouldn’t be until “The Needs of the Three! that Ash would see Azelf in its true form. Azelf contacted Ash in a dream and warned him of the destruction of the world, because of Team Galactic.

When Pokémon Hunter J awakened Azelf from its sleep throwing a bomb in Lake Valor, Ash felt a severe pain at his head because of his connection to Azelf. 7876852Later, when Azelf was kidnapped and taken to Team Galactic headquarters together with Mesprit and Uxie, Azelf convened Ash and teleported him there, where it was, at the Team Galactic headquarters.

Ash rescued Azelf from Team Galactic. Later, Ash and Azelf, through their connection, managed to help Palkia and Dialga calm and by doing so they also saved the world from destruction.76576547

Delia Ketchum – The Super Mom

Delia Ketchum / Hanako

ita icon_satoshipedia

In his novels “Pocket Monsters the Animation”, Takeshi Shudo dwelt very much upon Delia Ketchum, often repeating, during the narration, that reading this information would help us learn more about Ash and his future events.

Ash has inherited the character from his mother Delia Ketchum (Hanako in Japanese), who in fact we are used to see always smiling and carefree. Even as a mother, she has always been a strong and courageous woman, despite the enormous sufferings she had to endure in her life.

Delia is in fact very young and the relationship between Ash and her is much more like the one between brother and sister, rather than the one between mother and son. At the beginning of the anime, Delia still was under her 30s, even though she already had an 11-year old child. So, the day when Ash left for his trip, while wiping away her tears, she thought:

«… Tears, huh… I’m still young but, although my young age, I’m already the mother of a fully-fledged adult… As his mother, I’ve had to prove to be brave… I remember all the past ten years, ten months and ten days with Ash… All the adversities… All the painful moments in which it seemed impossible to  go on… The period of motherhood was really tough… But it was worth it.»

Since Ash’s father left home, she did not shed a single tear for a farewell any longer, although she generally was a person who tended to cry like a baby or have exaggerated reactions, even for a simple splinter stuck in a finger.

It all started when Delia was only 18 years old and her mother was still alive. A young aspiring Pokémon trainer was staying in her inn, the “Pallet House. Delia immediately fell in love with him and their relationship quickly became stronger, so much that they got married in a heartbeat. But right after Ash’s birth, the young man left the town and never came back. To make matters worse, Delia’s mother soon got ill and passed away, leaving her daughter alone with the Pallet House and the new-born Ash.

At that point, Delia had no choice but to be strong. Even if her husband had come back home, after leaving her alone for over ten years, she would have completely ignored him. If someone asked her: «Do you still love him?» her answer would be a clear «No!».

Despite this, Delia rejected all the proposals she received from other men, because she actually never wanted to divorce from Ash’s father. There were even a few rumors of her relationships with other men, but none of them was true.

Until the day Ash left home to travel and become a Pokémon Trainer, Delia managed to go on on her own. «It’s natural…» she thought to herself. Ash is her beloved son and she would take care of him until the day of his departure. It was her responsibility.

The relationship between Ash and Delia

As already said, there is a very unique relationship between Delia and Ash, very similar to the one existing between a couple of friends or brothers. Sometimes Ash wondered if some of Delia’s behaviors were the same of a typical mother and wanted her to be more like a normal adult woman. He often accused her of “pulling the mom card” only when it was convenient.0789079808

As a matter of fact, on the day of Ash’s departure Delia began to fantasize a bit. She was sad but at the same time she felt like a student who is about to start his summer holidays without any homework to do: starting from the following day she would have returned to be a free woman. Given that she still was so young, she could devote herself to many things. But until the next morning she still had to be the mother of Ash.

Shudo explains that being a mother is already a very hard job. However, despite her situation, Delia has never perceived her motherhood as something  tough. After all it was better than remaining completely alone, after her husband had left home.77969

Of course it has never been so easy for her… Despite that, every once in a while Delia felt the need to say «Thanks baby» to Ash.

Just to give an example, Ash became rebellious for the first time around the age of three. He combined a prank after another and, in order to keep him quiet, Delia often pretended to cry:

«Having such a rebellious son makes me the most unfortunate beauty in the world… Sniff, sniff. Waaah, waaaah»

However, as usual at her age, girls should go out and have fun rather than working as single mothers. That’s why Delia felt so unfortunate. At the beginning, she started to pretend to cry, but her tears soon became real when she started to stop and think of her life situation.

Ash was caught off guard when seeing his mother crying, so he immediately stopped making trouble. Then he approached her with a very sweet expression and asked: «Mom, what’s wrong? Are you ok? ». This gesture consoled Delia and made her feel the need to express her gratitude to his son.

Delia and the fathers of the bullies

When the bullies picked on Ash at the kindergarten and then to school, he’d get the teachers or the bullies fathers to tell them off. Or else, if the fathers of the bullies didn’t rebuke them, he would made sure the teacher did.709790

These bullies were children who at home didn’t breath an atmosphere of serenity. They were often children of single fathers or of husbands who were kicked out of the house after a marital dispute. If these men were looking for something to eat they had two options: a bento from the only convenience store of the village or going to the Pallet House (being the only restaurant in Pallet Town).

Delia, just like Ash, has the ability to always find the right words to help someone in need, so when these family men decided to eat at the Pallet House, she scolded them:

«Children need a mother and a father! Especially a father! You can’t underestimate the importance of a father! A father can’t just be working all the time! He has to spend time at home!»

Delia knew well what she was saying, she had the experience of both her father (Ash’s grandfather) and her husband: both left the family to become Pokémon trainers and never returned.

Thus, the men would remain silent and let her talk. In exchange, if you can call it like that, Delia would listen to their problems with their wives.

The mothers in the country, therefore, never complained the fact that their husbands came home late at night saying they were at the Pallet House. On the contrary, they would consider it a relief, because talking with Delia would inspire the fathers of Pallet Town to do their best for the home and their children. 79800This helped to improve the mood of mothers in the town. So, with both parents in a good mood, children would breath a climate of serenity and bullying against Ash ceased. Being no longer picked on, Ash was delighted to be able to focus only on its pranks. He loved to play around and cause mischief. Delia rebuked him when he was causing too many problems, but she never forced him to focus on his studies.

Delia’s wish

Delia has always wanted to convey optimism and serenity to Ash, therefore, also thanks to his strong character, he was never deeply shocked by the absence of his father, however as a child, he used to ask about him to his mom. He wanted to know what kind of person he was and what he was doing. He addressed to her the same questions also about his grandfather. Delia initially replied that they were two very special pokémon trainers. However, when Ash was five years old, she decided to reveal him the truth: though they left to become pokémon trainers, no one has heard anything about them. There is no evidence that they really became trainers.

Whether his father and grandfather were or were not good trainers made no difference in his desire to become a Pokémon trainer. However, if Ash had found out on the internet or when he grew up, it may have come as a shock.5685896

Paradoxically, having the weight of his father and grandfather failures on him was a kind of weird encouragement for Ash:

«I’m not going to end up like dad or grandpa!»

Said Ash to his mother, the night before leaving for his trip. But Delia thought, within herself:

«If he was anything like his father, he may never be back »

It was natural that Ash would have ended up dreaming of becoming a Pokémon trainer. Delia herself sometimes muttered: «Your dad and grandpa are out there somewhere trying to become Pokémon Trainers… Must be nice out there…»

She would say that only occasionaly but, in over ten years, this sentence ended to reach Ash’s ears many times, triggering in him the desire to become a Pokémon trainer.

48675Delia herself loved Pokémon and also wanted to become a trainer.

If she didn’t had to take over the Pallet House, being the only child of her family, Delia would have ignored any opposition of her mother and once she became ten she would have left home to become a Pokémon trainer, just like Ash.

The Voltorb shaped alarm clock

The alarm clock shaped like a Voltorb was donated to Ash by Delia for his tenth birthday.69876790

Pokémon themed goods are always a best seller, so you can’t get them in a small village like Pallet Town. Consequently to get that clock, Delia had to leave her busy schedule for three days and go to a department store in the metropolis of Cerulean City, where she waited five hours in line to buy it.

For Delia, that Voltorb clock held more significance than just a birthday present for his son: it was an expression of motherly love for Ash to take on his journey. His birthday was only a suitable opportunity to give it to him.

Ash-Greninja

The Ash Form

ita icon_satoshipedia

Ash GreninjaThe “Ash Form” is a form that only Ash’s Greninja can take. It is a synchronization between Ash and Greninja called “Bond Phenomenom” and appears to have ancient origins.

The Bond Phenomenon occurs very rarely, when the mutual trust between Pokémon and his trainer reaches very high levels, and the two manage to dominate it.

The Pokémon can use the “Bond Phenomenom” possess a special ability, thanks to which they manage to understand which trainer is able to bring out this hidden power. That’s why Greninja chose only and exclusively Ash as it’s trainer, rejecting anyone else.

The phenomenon occurs when the brain impulses of Ash and Greninja synchronize up to join. At that point the two are related to each other as if they were in one body.

534645During the syncronization, Greninja transforms and it becomes similar in appearance to Ash. 689698Their movements are identical and, as revealed by one of Clemont’s gadgets, they share the same heartbeat. Ash can also see through Greninja’s eyes, in fact he describes what he feels during the syncronization as if he “becomes” Greninja.

However, this phenomenon has side effects for Ash, which in fact states that he feels very tired after every syncronization. 68690Every time that Greninja is hit, Ash can feel the pain in the same spots in which his pokémon is hurt.

The energy released by the syncronization can also be too violent for Ash, to the point that his body becomes paralized and he faints because of the pain and fatigue.

To be able to withstand the power of synchronization, Ash conviced himself that he has to become as similar as possible to Greninja. 7458Due to this he undergoes himself to its same workouts, although with difficulty since, obviously, an human cannot compete phisically with a Pokémon.

After the first training, Ash accepted a battle against Champion Diantha. In this occasion, new traits of the synchronization came out. This time Ash resitsted longer, reaching a “new level”. 76472The brain waves analysis performed by Lem recorded some changes: their intensity became higher and higher. At the same time Ash seemed increasingly “involved” in the fight and started to repeat phrases like “much, much stronger!!! ” or “much, much faster!” very frequently until Greninja jumped out from the water veil that had always surrounded him. Since then, the veil became a big water-shuriken.

The power reached by Ash and Greninja was so high that floored Diantha’s Gardevoir. AshGreninjaAt that point, though, Ash seemed almost “crazy” and while Lem’s indicator was still recording abnormal brain waves, he ordered Greninja to go on with what turned out to be a ruthless knockout blow for Gardevoir. If Ash hadn’t suddenly collapsed again, he would have defeated champion Diantha’s Pokémon in all probability.

098980

During the battle against Sawyer (episode XYZ 26) for the first time the synchronization failed. Ash was flooredb by that and initially no one was able to understand why that happened. The only thing that Clemont was able to state is that, during the battle, Ash’s and Greninja’s pulses were completely desynchronized. Following the events of the episode XYZ 28 it is knew that the synchronization is probably not happen because Ash was unconsciously worried due to Sawyer, who has won his last medal before him and has become unexpectedly strong in a short time.

During the first fight against Wulfric (episode XYZ 27) Ash managed to synchronize with Greninja. However, he could feel all the hits received by Greninja and this annoyed him. Fearing another defeat because of a collapse, Ash lost his concentration and ended up suffering from many attack. When Greninja was thrown violently against a wall, Ash was no longer able to bear the pain and collapsed again, causing the defeat of his Pokémon (since they were synchronized).

Ash feared he had disappointed Greninja, and that night he apologized to him for not being able to bear the hit. If Ash had endured more, Greninja could have unleashed its full power. Therefore, Ash must learn to resist more... But how?

As usual when he feels sad and discouraged, Ash asks his friends to be left alone. So he walked the Winding Woods in search of an answer.

(episode XY120) After being scolded by Serena, Ash recovered his optimism, remembering that whatever the difficulties are, he must never give up. This helped him when, a few hours later, he and Greninja saved a Pokémon in danger during a snowstorm. The will to save that Pokémon was so strong that allowed Ash and Greninja to achieve perfect synchronization.

At that point, Ash apologized again to Greninja: he gave priority to gaining the badge and keeping up with Sawyer, to whom he had promised to immediately win it. During the battle, Ash’s only thought was: “I’m a trainer so I have to do my best and hang on”, but in the forest he understood that this does not necessarily mean succeeding in it alone. He has a precious friend at his side, ready to give him his strength.

Greninja’s story

Before knowing Ash, Greninja was one of the frokies available at Professor Sycamore’s laboratory for the new trainers.6808 However, compared to the other Pokémon of the same species, Ash’s Froakie was very different. As explained by Gym Leader Olympia, it is a Pokémon with a peculiar destiny. In fact it never played with the other ones in its herd, and it spent all its time training so it could become stronger and stronger. However, this was the cause of a fight with the others, and it ended up hurt and being medicated by Nurse Joy. Thanks to her kindness, she managed to teach it that it couldn’t become stronger all on its own: it needed a trainer.

098

Froakie, however, didn’t just want any trainer. It was determined to understand which trainer was worth dedicating its life. It expected great things from its trainer, but every time someone chose it, Froakie ended up disappointed and decided to go back to Professor Sycamore’s laboratory. This went on until it meet Ash. 709Froakie was very impressed by Ash’s determination, by his courage and by his love for the Pokémon. And so it chose him as its trainer. It is thanks to this special connection between Ash and Greninja that the syncronization can occur.

Focus: Ash’s house and the history of Pallet Town

ita icon_satoshipedia

Ash Ketchum is native of Pallet Town, a little rural village located in the south-west of the Kanto region. It’s inspired by Shimoda Town, an existing city in Japan.

Masara Town

It’s called Pallet Town because of the typical white houses all over the village; however, in the Japanese version, it’s called Masara Village (though in the anime it’s named Masara Town).

Masara Village was named after a legendary hero, called Masara Ookido. He lived in the village about a century before the anime starts. He was showered with honors for being the only trainer in town ranking at the 921st position on the list of the best 10 thousands Pokémon trainers. Because of this, a monument in the central plaza was erected in his honor, and the village’s name was changed from Masshiro Village to Masara Village.

Masara Ookido was Professor Oak’s grandfather (Yukinari Ookido). Talking about Oak’s family, the professor has two older brothers: the middle one is Pallet’s postal office’s chief, while the older brother was the mayor at the time of the first series, and in fact he was the one who hired Gary’s cheerleaders.
At the time of the Advanced series the mayor was Gilbert’s father (a character appeared in Pokémon Chronicles).

Ash’s house

Ash lives in one of Pallet’s typical white houses, and it’s very spacious and cozy. It’s on two floors, and on the exterior it’s surrounded by a garden, which in some places was turned into a kitchen garden by Delia, given her passion for gardening.

2wgymio.jpg

Takeshi Shudo in his novels “Pocket Monsters the Animation” hinted that Ash’s house is also the “Pallet House” inn, in which Delia works.

Pallet House is the only restaurant in Pallet Town, and on the second floor it’s also a guest-house. 33xh1qo.jpgIt was run by Delia’s parents, however she was forced to inherit it when her mother (Ash’s grandmother) died of illness, a little after Ash’s birth.

Delia runs the inn admirably, so much so that her cooking skills were mentioned in the book “Unexplored Regions: The best food in the little villages”.

The restaurant is located on the ground level, supposedly behind the house (communicating, obviously, with the kitchen), in which can be seen the little inn, visible only with a careful observation of some shots.

Regarding the remaining interiors, we know every single corner of the first floor, while on the second floor were shown just two rooms: Ash’s and Delia’s bedrooms. On the other side are located the guest-house’s rooms.

Ash’s room shown in some official sketches:

Fun fact: In Pallet Town also lives Mrs Masae, a “nice” lady who loves to gossip through her personal radio show!

“Pokemon: The Animation” – Official informations about Ash’s father

ita icon_satoshipedia

Who is Ash’s Father?

Takeshi Shudo, creator of the Pokémon anime, published in 1997 and in 1999 two books titled Pocket Monsters: The Animation Volume 1 and 2, in which he revealed some of the greatest mysteries of the Pokemon series.

CLICK HERE for more information about these books!

This is the chapter in which there are official information about Ash’s father:

“—I can’t sleep.” Satoshi said.
Hanako said with striking Satoshi’s pillow.
“Sure, I can understand your feeling. All the people of 10 years old and over are aiming to be a pokemon trainer in this town. Your dad, your grandpa —and yourself—.” When she said about Satoshi’s dad and grandpa, the pillow was like a punching bag.
“Dad and grandpa—”
A memory when Satoshi was five years old flashed across his mind.

*

It was the day when a PC was given to him for the first time.
Hanako said with staring at a brand-new PC.
“Hey, my son. I must say to you. —Your father and grandpa are great pokemon trainers. Aren’t they?”
Of course, Satoshi was believed so.
“Hey mom, tell me! What is my dad like? What sort of a man is my grandpa?”
When little Satoshi asked Hanako, she always gave the same answer.
“Your dad and grandpa are sooo surreal trainers who surpass the hero Ohkido Masara— possibly.”
“Surreal?” It wasn’t a familiar word for him.
“Surrealistic— super-realistic”
“They are superior men, you meant.”
“It’s something like that.”
But the day when the PC was delivered, superior dad and grandpa have been transformed into different persons. This is how it happened—
Hanako bobbed her head to little Satoshi.
“Sorry, dear. I told you a falsehood.” Hanako said to Satoshi with his mouth wide open.
“Falsehood—.”
“Surrealistic trainers. Surrealistic is super-realistic, super-realistic means to stand aloof from the reality—in other words, it’s a nonsense. Give me a break!”
A break should have been given to Satoshi more than her.
Hanako asked.
“Satoshi, when you begin to use a PC, you get into on-line communication, —don’t you?”
“Yeah” Satoshi nodded.
“Then, you access to pokemon-related web pages, and maybe you want to know more about your dad and grandpa.”
“Yeah, sure.”
“But maybe you won’t be able to know it. ”
“Why? ”
“‘Cause I told a pack of lies—.”
“Eh—?”
“It’s not a lie what your dad and grandpa aimed to be a pokemontrainer—it’s a fact—they are away on a journey, it’s an obvious fact, too.”
“Well.”
“But they became full-fledged trainers—”
“Well?”
“It is a lie, probably”
“A lie?”
“You have never seen the report your dad and grandpa were elected to the ten thousand best trainers in a magazine or a journal.”
“Yeah, I’ve never seen it.”
“But you are utterly indifferent to it because only the participants of the League Tournament of the year are put on the best ten thousand list. The great trainer called Pokemon Master don’t compete in Pokemon League—there are many great trainers even if the one aren’t put on the list.”
“Well”
“But if you check out www I’ll be completely at a loss for a reply.
“www?”
“Yeah, you can get easily on www the membership list of the World Pokemontrainers Association—all official trainers are on the list—I hear the names of official trainers are a billion including the deceased in the list.”
“The membership list? That’s the first I’ve heard of it.”
“You can get it. Then you can search easily for your dad and grandpa’s names by PC even if there are a billion official trainers. So— I say before you search for it.—you can’t find the names of your dad and grandpa.”
“Why?”
“Your dad and grandpa aren’t authorized yet. In other words, they don’t become quite official trainers yet.”
“H’m”
Long silence hung between Hanako and Satoshi for some time.
“What are they doing now? Dad and grandpa?” Satoshi asked.
Hanako shrugged her shoulders.
“I don’t knoooow. Even if they are aiming a trainer—their names had never been put on the list—it’s so fruitless—”
“It’s so fruitless—”
Satoshi repeated Hanako’s words.
Because Hanako hate gloomy mood, she said it as if it were nothing important.
“But, it doesn’t mean your efforts are fruitless. Don’t mind about your dad and grandpa, from now on. It is up to you whether you become a trainer or not, Satoshi.”
“Drat! Uncool!”
“Yeah, uncool. Sooo uncool.”
Hanako smiled.
It was a relief to her to realize that Satoshi wasn’t a deeply shocked.
Satoshi’s feeling was as his word—“Uncool!”.
His dad and grandpa are not always here closely but he had seen them only by photographs.
To five-year-old Satoshi, it doesn’t seem real story.
Whether his father and grandfather are great trainers or not, he didn’t change his mind to want to be a pokemontrainer.
But she murmured occasionally.
“Satoshi’s dad and grandpa are still now on a journey somewhere with the aim of becoming a pokemontrainer—How I envy them!”
Even if she murmured occasionally, he heard it so many times because it reached his ears until the time he become ten.
It was only natural that Satoshi dreams of becoming a pokemontrainer.
But Hanako didn’t mutter because she was anxious for their safety.
Because Hanako loves pokemons, she herself wished to be a pokemontrainer.
If Hanako wasn’t the successor of her mother’s restaurant, she would have gone on a journey at 10 years old to training for pokemontrainer like Satoshi even if she steamrollered her mother’s opposition.
They said that it had better go into training while young to become a good trainer.
But I’m my teens, so enough for it.
If someone who succeeds my mother’s restaurant appears, I will leave it to the one and start on a journey immediately.
Hanako wasn’t given up.
But—
It was one day when she was 18 years old—Hanako’s mother was still living.
She fell in love with a traveler wanted to be a pokemontrainer who stayed at her mother’s inn at first sight. She went into rapture that she felt absurd for herself, instantly got married to him.
But he set out on a journey, and he never again return home.
To make matters worse, her mother instantly passed away of a disease, Hanako inherited the inn and a newborn baby.
“Do you love him even now?” If she is asked, she will reply “No, sure!”.
If a woman like Hanako was abandoned and her husband return home after 10 years shamelessly, she will ignore him because It is too absurd to get angry.
Hanako made up her mind to bring up Satoshi until he starts on a journey with the aim of becoming a pokemontrainer by herself.

About Pokénerd

Pokénerd was born in Umbria, Italy, in June 1992. She got so attached to the pokémon anime since the very beginning that she carefully watches every single episode. Her knowledge about the main character, Ash Ketchum is really vast. She discovered everything about him, and now she manages the entire online encyclopedia

Focus: Ash’s sunny and positive personality

ita icon_satoshipedia

The gift of infusing courage and happiness

Ash is extremely stubborn and brave: these are the two features that distinguish him more than any other. When he sticks to do something or to achieve a certain goal, nothing and nobody can stop him, also because, thanks to his courage, he manages to overcome every type of fear, especially when he has to help someone who is in trouble or in danger.

Since he was a child, his motto has always been “Saigo made akirameru na” (literally: “Don’t give up until it’s over”  and it doesn’t refer only to Pokémon Battles, but, above all, to life. Untitled-1Ash always repeats this to his friends, especially to those who don’t want to face difficulties, ecouraging them to try and stick to their guns. Then, he usually says: “See? You made it, didn’t you?”

All these characteristics lead him to always be  sunny and positive, so much that he becomes able to infuse bravery, confidence, and joy to those around him.ygtoiyuil
This also because Ash, thanks to his empathy, has the extraordinary gift of always finding the right words to say and cheer up those who feel sad or discouraged. Actually, in his group of friends, he always covers the role of “psychologist” and encourager: every time someone has a problem, he immediately notices, as a sorts of a sixth sense. Ash_Dawn_angryThen, without a second thought, he sits next to them and after asking what’s wrong, he helps them find a solution.

Ash_Friendship

Daijobu: That’s OK!

Ash often uses the word “Daijobu!” which traslates to: “everything is OK!”, even if he’s the one to get hurt, so as not to worry those who are beside him, smiling and saying everything’s all right, even if it isn’t true.

Ash has super strong feelings, and thanks to this extraordinary characteristic, nothing can scare him, as stated in the books written by Takeshi Shudo (the creator of the Anime): even the absence of his father couldn’t shock him (which made Delia feel really relieved). Shudo also explains that probably Ash’s Character now would be different if he had known his father.

Obviously, like everyone, Ash has got problems and insecurities. This was both revealed in some verses of the Japanese theme song (“[…] I smile, but with some tears […], or […] Even though I have memories of a  few painful things I don’t even notice them, as if they fell from a hole in my backpack […]) and by Ash himself on some occasions in the episodes. However Ash, in order not to worry the people who travels with him, doesn’t manifest his worries and always keeps smiling.

For example, Ash  hates  loneliness, presumably because he spent his childhood playing on his own. When he is alone, in fact, he tends to sadden.

It happened a few times that Ash got heavily demotivated as a result of bad defeats. The first time was when he lost the battle of the Indigo league. It was his first time there and he was so disappointed he hid in his room, not wanting to eat anything. As always, fortunately, these bad moments don’t last long thanks to the support of his friends.

The second time was in the episode: “Evolving strategies!” of the DP Galactic Battles series, when he got heavily defeated by Paul in the battle organized by Reggie. Though he wouldn’t admit it, Ash was slightly intimidated by Paul.
In fact, every time Ash battled against him or in his presence, he lost his head, ending up being defeated. This time Ash was very confident in defeating Paul in that battle at Lake Acuity and prove him that Pokémons can become even stronger if you treat them with kindness.
Ash couldn’t focus properly on the battle and he suffered a devastating defeat 4 – 0, that demotivated him to the point of closing himsels off. Ash’s mood has been accentuated by the frames in which Ash’s eyes are not shown during the whole final of the episode.

Obviously Ash has recovered his usual cheerful mood, even if (in the rest of the DP series), he tended to be concerned or saddened every time someone mentioned Paul, until the episode in which Ash defeats him.

Ash’s gentle nature

Although Ash is extremely brave and often proves to be very severe in his role as a trainer, he normally has a kind, gentle and caring personality. These are features that are not often seen in boys, and this makes him even more special on a humane level to such an extent that his fans have considered him much more than the simple character of an animated series.

This side of Ash’s character comes out even in his work with his Pokémons. In his opinion, the Pokémon team must be a big family and he says it constantly, creating an atmosphere of happiness and solidarity. This method has found application during Chimchar’s training: a very shy and insecure Pokémon, who couldn’t do its best because of Paul’s intimidating and rigid nature, but once it joined Ash’s team, who always praised and reassured it, the little Pokémon, thanks to the love of his trainer, became increasingly stronger. It evolved into Monferno, then into Infernape, and then, in his final battle, it managed to defeat the one who frightened and scared it the most.

Ash’s Age in each series

ita icon_satoshipediaAsh’s Age in each series

We can’t start talking about Ash without having clarified first the question about his age.

As mentioned in several previously published articles, one of which you can read at THIS LINK, the urban legend that Ash is always 10 after many series, has been largely disproved by several factors, like official sources from the creator of the animated  series and many informations given in the anime episodes themself:

What you’re going to read is candidly observable in the animated series. So I have written NOTHING that you cannot check for yourself 🙂

> The first animated series, in which OFFICIALLY has passed more than a year: in the various episodes were regularly inserted tips about the passage of months. Therefore, you can know with absolute certainty the period of time of each episode.

> The episode in the Rival Destinies series “Goodbye, Junior Cup – Hello Adventure!” where Dawn clearly says that a year has passed since her participation to the previous Wallace Cup, so it’s impossible that Ash was nine in that series.

> If we take into account the months elapsed that were mentioned in the episodes, together make more than ONE YEAR in the timeline of Pokémon anime (two monts after Ash’s departure in the episode “The School of Hard Knocks“, two months before the Indigo League in the episode “Showdown at the Po-ké Corral“, one month before the Wirl Cup in the episode “Around the Whirlpool“, three months before the Silver Conference in the episodeWhy? Wynaut!“, three months before the Hoenn League in the episode “Eight Ain’t Enough“, one month before the Kanto Grand Festival in the episode “New Plot, Odd Lot!“, one month before the Sinnoh League in the episode “The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!” and two months before the Unova League).

> The third short-movie (Pikachu and Pichu Brothers), where Ash celebrated the anniversary of his meeting with Pikachu. It was  not the first anniversary and the movie must have took place between the 4th and the 5th season (for reasons you will soon read) but anyway there is NO DOUBT ABOUT IT: since Ash’s departure, more than a year has passed.

> The growth of Ash’s Lapras, who changed in appearance in one of the last episodes of “Master Quest”.

> In the book This is Animation Pocket Monsters The Movie “Mewtwo Strikes Back” “Pikachu’s vacation” Takeshi Shudo explains that between Mewtwo’escape from the Team Rocket’s base and the moment in which Ash received the invitation for New Islan, a year passes. Anime writers have decided to make pass only a couple of months (since Mewtwo’s escape is present in the episode titled “Showdown at the Poké-Corral“), thus proving yet another mistake concerning the timeline in the anime. The film “Mewtwo Strikes Back“, indeed, has a precise collocation in the anime: the events took place between the episodes “The Pi-Kahuna” and “Make Room for Gloom“.

> Several trainers visibly younger than Ash, have already obtained their first Pokémon (Including Trevor and Scottie, in recent episodes of XY), but, as you know, it is NOT possible to receive the first Pokémon from a Professor or affiliates BEFORE having turned 10 years old.

> In the episode “A Goldenrod Opportunity” (Pokémon Johto League Champions), the Magnet Train was not built and it needed a year to be completed. In the Best Whishes episoded where Iris and Cilan decide to travel from Kanto to Johto, they decide to use that same train, showing even in this case the passage of years in the series.

Informations reported also on Bulbapedia (Click to zoom in)

> Paul also competed in the tournaments of the Pokémon League of Kanto, Johto and Hoenn. They are held EVERY YEAR and since Paul has competed in different editions from those in which Ash competed, this proves that they inevitably have different ages (and also that, of course, height is by no means a major factor in establishing the age of a character)

Screen by Bulbapedia

Also, in the recent episode “A Festival Trade! A Festival Farewell?” of the XY series, Jessie makes a reference about her birthday (in the Japanese version too) that was even celebrated during the same XY series. Demonstrating once more that, in the story, there is a passage of years.

More reasons in the article linked above.

As for the official information given by the creator of the animated series, we are going to open a broader case concerning the age of Ash in the various series.

Takeshi Shudo, creator of Pokémon Anime, published two books in 1997 and in 1999 that unveiled some of the secrets of the animated series (if you are curious about it you may check THIS LINK for a detailed summary of the books), including the truth about the day of Ash’s departure on his journey.

In Pallet Town it existed the rule that new trainers could begin their formative journey on APRIL 1st following their tenth birthday. This fixes the inconsinstency in the first episode of the animated series in which it’s said that Ash was leaving because hejust turned 10, but at the same time Gary and other two trainers left with him. Was it everyone’s birthday, perhaps? No, simply the writers have made a mistake.

Takeshi Shudo also revealed that on the day of his departure Ash’s age was exactly 10 years, 10 months and 10 days, so, starting from April 1st and going back this amount of time, it is possible to determine the date of his birth: May 22nd. Basically, Ash’s age was almost 11 when he left.

Since during the 9th episode of the animated series it was made clear that two months have passed since Ash’s departure, here’s another confirmation that Ash’s age was 10 only in the first 6-7 episodes of the animated series.

For what concerns the other series:

In the Orange League Ash’s age was 12. Summer was confirmed in that period (the 2° movie). The previous summer (the one in which Ash was 11) was in the period of the censored episode “Beauty and the Beach”. As already mentioned, in the first series were inserted specific references to the months in which the episodes were set. Ash left for his journey in April, and after 9 episodes May arrives. We clearly understand that the episode “Beauty and the Beach” was set in the adjacent summer.

After several episodes (enough time to make 6 months pass) the events of “Holiday Hi-Jynx” took place (which, according to the OFFICIAL numeration, it’s the episode 39) and an episode of the New Year’s Eve titled: “It’s New Year’s Eve! Pocket Monsters Encore” but which has never been broadcasted because of the scandal of the episode titled “Electric Soldier Porygon“.

Another handful of episodes later we have “Princess vs. Princess” (which was postponed due to “Electric Soldier Porygon“, but remains the fact that according to the official numeration it’s the episode 50) set on March 3rd because it refers to the celebration of Hinamatsuri. Five episodes later the events of “The purr-fect hero” (this episode was also postponed) were set on May 5th because it refers to the Children’s Day in Japan. Here, a year has already passed. In the following episodes, it’s further confirmed that it was Summer (the episode “Riddle Me This“, “The Breeding Center Secret“, etc.). From there to the Indigo League another two months has passed, so the Indigo League was held in the month of July, while the Orange League was set around August/September.

Together with Hideki Sonoda, Takeshi Shudo also wrote a novel dedicated to the film “Mewtwo Strikes Back” in which he explained that between Mewtwo’s escape from the Team Rocket’s base and the moment in which Ash received the invitation for New Islan, a year passes. Anime writers, instead, have decided to make pass only a couple of months and this way they made another mistake concerning the anime timeline.

It is not clear, however, whether this year should be considered as an additional year which has to be added to the timeline or Shudo wanted to collocate Mewtwo’s escape and film in the same year in which the first series takes place.

During the Johto League Tournament Ash’s age was about 12/13 because Winter was confirmed during the Johto League Champions series (episode “Moving pictures”). Two Christmas episodes of the Pokémon Chronicles series are also set in this period (consequently the episodes in The Johto Journey series were set during Autumn). The League was held in the Spring/Summer of the same year.

During the Hoenn League Tournament, Ash’s age was more ore less 13 because the Advanced and Advanced Challenge series took place right after the Johto League (in some episodes of the two above mentioned series it has been said that it was still Summer). The Hoenn league was held in the following Winter (Source: the episode “The Relicanth really can!” set more than 3 months before the league, where the beaches were crowded with people, because it was Summer.)

References: these two pictures as a confirmation

The Hoenn region is the most southerly located region and is based upon the Kyushu island (Japan), where there is an almost tropical climate. It may also be noticed in the anime during the episodes of the league, in which, although it was winter, it didn’t seem to be cold.

In addition, during this generation Ash has also reached Misty in height.

In Battle Frontier Ash’s age was 14.

Ash returns to travel in the Kanto region, where his previous travel lasted one year. The series starts more or less during the Winter, in fact the episode “Time Warp Heals All Wounds”  is set on the Christmas period, as in the Japanese air of it.

Later, in the episode “Spontaneous Combusken” it’s shown that it was again Summer, as was in the movie “Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea“.

The last episode of the Battle Frontier series is clearly set on February, because in the Kanto region during this month the sun sets at around 5 PM, just as shown in the episode (further confirmation comes from the DP series which takes place in Spring). vlcsnap-00003Since almost an year is needed to cross the Kanto region, this is the reason why the same amount of time has passed in this case too.

During the Sinnoh League Tournament Ash’s age was 15. This was because in Diamond and Pearl series it was Spring and in Battle Dimension and Galactic Battles it was Summer. (The episodes of the Pokémon Summer Academy and the 12th movie were clearly set in the Summer). The league was held in Autumn (the tournament has started two months after Ash won the last badge, and here there are also confirmations related to the time the sun was setting).

At the end of the Sinnoh League, Ash stayed at home for some months, then he went for a new journey (in a place never mentioned nor in Diamond&Pearl series nor in XY series)  where he met Alexia.

Be careful: The events of Unova region are NOT mentioned nor in the Diamond&Pearl Series, nor the XY One. Our enciclopedia takes in consideration only what was shown during the series that are part of the original timeline. So the lenght of the Black&White series constitues a Hole in the timeline.

The time hole starts from Ash’s return at home in the last episode of Diamond&Pearl (autumn) to Ash’s arrival in Kalos (summer-end of the following year). So, we continue counting the timeline by adding an year.

At the start of the XY series Ash is 16 years old. XY is initially set in late spring. Later, the episodes of the Summer Camp demonstrated the summer season. Autumn is coming towards the end of Kalos Quest, indeed there are lots of autumn landscapes and falling leaves like in episode “A Fashionable Battle”.

The start of the XY&Z series is set in November because in the episode  XY097 “Dream a little dream from me!” the protagonists are watching the Litleonids. Litleonids are a meteor shower mentioned in the Delta Episode of the OR AS games. It takes the name from the Leonids shower, which always falls in November (intentionally coinciding with the Ruby and Sapphire games release, reference also mentioned in OR AS). The same XY097 episode aired in Japan during November. The end of the series seems to be set in the spring and Ash’s age is 16 and a half (17 in the following May).

For obvious and logical reasons the Pokémon anime has ended. Anyway if you are continuing to follow it, you must always take into account the instructions provided in this article. Try to differentiate the real Ash that we all know (and whose growth is evident for all of us) from the purely commercial reboots.

Ash’s childhood

Ash was a very lively and naughty child, in fact, he loved playing around and cause mischief.
Delia told him off when he caused too much trouble, but she never forced him to focus on his studies.

Most of the information that  you are going to read are taken from famous books written by the creator of the animated series, upon which you can read informations at THIS LINK.

Ash became rebellious for the first time around the age of three. In order to keep him quiet, Delia often pretended to cry. However, Ash was also a very sweet child. Indeed, on one occasion, it happened that Delia ended up crying for real because she kept thinking that she was a very young, single mother. Once that had happened, Ash immediately stopped making trouble. He approached Delia and by simply asking her «Mommy. What’s wrong? Are you okay?» he managed to console her. Ash’s gesture made Delia feel very reassured and as a matter of fact she often felt the need to tell him «Thank you Baby» Ash attended maternal and primary school in Pallet Town, unlike Gary, who decided to attend an elementary school in the nearby town. Since he’s member of the Oak family, he didn’t want to attend the small primary school of Pallet Town. Every day he had a two hour journey to get to and from school.

Ash could not stand Gary, but at the same time he didn’t give too much weight to his attitudes of superiority, because in a way he was sympathetic towards him: «Gary is a self centered jerk who look down on others just because he’s a member of the Oak family, his lineage is all he have going for him, yet he is still full of himself. However, it must be tough having to live up to your ancestors…». That’s what Ash thoughtsometimes in regards to Gary.

On the other hand, with a father and grandfather who were complete failures, it’s quite possible that Gary thought that Ash was quite pitiable himself.

Ash and bullying

When bullies picked on Ash in maternal and elementary school, he’d get the teachers or the bully’s father to tell them off. Or well, if the bully’s father wouldn’t tell them off, he’d make sure the teacher did.

The problem of bullying was finally resolved by Delia, who talked to bullies’ fathers and urged them to solve their conjugal problems. Having a happier family, bullies gradually stopped targeting Ash, who could devote himself to his pranks again.

Ash always played alone while having fun with rather dangerous games like climbing trees and  descending from the hills on wooden boards (thanks to these activities he developed a great agility). He also loved fishing and hunting insects.

Despite that, Ash has  claimed many times to hate loneliness, describing it as “very hard” and “a source of suffering”, as if he felt such sensations on his own skin. This makes it clear that in his childhood Ash felt quite alone, although he always hid his sadness. This is also confirmed in the texts of some Japanese theme songs,

Usually, in the anime series, the lyrics of Japanese theme songs are about the feelings of the characters. In THIS ARTICLE we delved into all Ash’s character and psychological aspects, also taking advantage of them.

Little Ash and his father

Ash has never known his father, except through pictures and stories of his mother Delia, who was constantly inundated with questions about him: «Where is Dad?» «What is he doing now?». Delia obviously couldn’t answer these questions, so she merely told him that he was an extraordinary Pokémon Trainer, until one day, in which Ash was 5 years old, she has been forced to confess to having told him many lies, because no one had heard anything about Ash’s father, so no one even knew if he actually became a good trainer.

That same day, a computer was given to Ash, through which he could have verified through the internet if his father has been successful as a trainer, but unfortunately he couldn’t find anything.

However Ash was never deeply shocked by his father’s absence, thanks to his strong feelings. This was a relief for Delia. In this regard, as explained by Shudo, probably Ash’s character now would be different if he had known his father.

Given that Delia had always wanted to be a Pokémon Trainer, occasionally she murmured: «Ash’s dad and grandpa are still now on a journey somewhere with the aim of becoming a pokemontrainer…How I envy them!» These words come so many times to Ash’s ears that triggered him a strong desire to become a Pokemon trainer.

(You can read the full chapter in the dialogue between Ash and Delia at THIS LINK)

HERE for other interesting details about Ash’s childhood and his relationship with Delia

Ash and Prof. Oak

Initially, Ash didn’t know much prof. Oak, he had only seen him a few times, at night, while he used to go to the inn of his mother (in which he went ther just to eat pre-cooked meals while reading a book). Ash didn’t have chance to talk with the Prof. just because in that moment, Ash must have been sleeping. As time passed he had the opportunity of knowing him better, because he’s always been a Delia’s close friend and Gary’s grandfather.
The two families spent a lot of time together, also going at the Cinema.

Ash and Serena at Summer Camp

Later, Prof. Oak organized a Pokémon Summer Camp, to which, obviously, Ash participated.
There he meets Serena, a girl he met again in the Kalos region.

Serena fell on the ground and hurt her knee, but then Ash intervened. He tied a handkerchief and gently applied it to her knee and helped her to stand up, accompanying her to the camp, from which she got lost. The little girl was impressed by Ash’s kindness and immediately had a crush on him, but unfortunately, once terminated the camp, she had no way of seeing him again.

tidbit about Ash’s childhood

> As a child when Ash communicating using his computer or tried to put on airs, Ash was referring to himself by the pronoun “boku”, but in general he always says “ore”.

Delia often enlists the help of Ash to do the gardening. However, Delia made Ash work so much that he couldn’t even study.

> In Western versions of the anime, Ash, as a child, was nicknamed “Little Ash”, because of its (still) short stature. This nick was used mostly by Gary (who called him “Ashy-Boy” too) as well as in the first series of the anime, where Team Rocket and Misty used it too (adding other nicknames like “Little Twerp” or “Little Face” etc.)

> Before his departure, Ash has spent 10 days trying to find his characteristic pose of victory (that always accompanies his “Getto Daze”).
Photo taken from a book by Takeshi Shudo

Moreover, having planned to start his journey with BulbasaurCharmander o Squirtle, he had thought at some nicknames for these three Pokémon, respectively: DanesukeKagetarou and Zenibou.

Focus: How Ash has changed and matured over the years

ita icon_satoshipediaAsh’s growth

Over the years and with the progress of the story, we can objectively observe a mental and physical growth concerning Ash, and this is an established fact.

Watching the episodes is impossible to not notice that in the first series Ash had a totally different behavior from now, which is now unequivocally more mature.
For example, in the early seasons Ash often brags about small successes and had a childish arrogance, but now, since he’s matured, he doesn’t even think to behave in this way and he even scolds (in his own way ) those who make this mistake.
Ash’s way of reasoning and his way of relating to the others are also visibly changed from the first series, and this was undoubtedly noticed by those who have always followed the anime assiduosly. In fact, the book “The Japanification of Children’s Popular Culture” emphasized Ash’s growth and development as the anime series progressed.

Let’s see specifically how Ash has changed over the years.

Ash in the first series

In the first series, Ash had just started his journey. Even though he was only at the beginning of his trainer career and he never put an effort in studying Pokémon when he was at school, he showed a good knowledge of the attacks that every pokemon was able to use, and you can easily see his talent for Pokémon Battles, although it was still immature and needed to properly develope his ability, since Ash was still clumsy and inexperienced; because of this, in Pokémon Battles, he always needed Misty’s and Brock’s suggestions. Even in his first tournament of the Pokémon League they sat on the sideline as assistants. Ash’s behaviors were obviously childish, and in fact, after every success he tended to become conceited (often becoming quite obnoxious) and euphoric. When he doesn’t act as a vain boy, he is quite cute.
Ash has always been a nice and polite guy, however, he always said what he thought and that made him sincere, but somewhat cheeky.

At that time, he was also very spiteful, especially towards Misty who often did not appreciate his humor at all. He kept his particular feature with him: being a prankster is part of his own personality but, of course, it’s not as obvious as when he was a child.

The courage, of course, is a quality he always had, although in the first series he was a little crybaby and, though he did not want to admit it, he was terrified of spectral and ghostly places.

Ash in the series of Orange and Johto

In the Orange League we can start seeing a little maturity in his attitudes, although occasionally he continued adopting conceited behaviors (this is until the “Battle Advanced” series).

In the Johto saga, in his favor there’s the fact that he actually matured as a trainer: In fact, it is from this point in time that his talent as a strategist comes out, proving to be very able to get out of critical situations using his now famous sudden strategies (in depth analysis on THIS LINK) which in most cases were based on the exploitation of the battle field.

During the Johto League, Misty and Brock continued to sit on the sideline as assistants, but they stopped giving advices to Ash, since he proved to no longer need them.

Regarding his character, he also started to consolidate its sweetness, visible especially in respect to his pokémon, which he lovingly cuddled and comforted especially if sad or frightened. He won his Chikorita’s love (currently Bayleef) that in many cases was also assuming attitudes of jealousy towards Ash.

During this series the fights between Ash and Misty also started to decrease.
In fact Ash, especially in the second half of this saga, has become sweet and cute even towards Misty (and of course vice versa), until he reached the apex, in the episode in which they separate.

Ash in the Advanced saga

After finally having defeated Gary and after saying goodbye to the friends who accompanied him on his journey until Johto, Ash looked slightly bewildered, because from that moment on, he would have to go on by his own, but being extremely positive, he took the opportunity for what he considered a new beginning: he left home all of his Pokémon except for Pikachu and departed towards the Hoenn region, in order to start a new adventure, but this time, all on his own.

Once arrived in the new region, Ash’s new traveling companion has become May, a novice trainer initially very awkward and clumsy.

In fact, from this series on, Ash began to assume the role of veteran trainer (although at first a little insecurely), helping  May with advices and instructions about the lives of Pokémon trainers: role previously held by Misty and Brock towards Ash. In the middle of this third generation, Ash has finally stopped taking conceited attitudes, even giving May wise adviced, who suddenly, in the series, started to take the same behaviors.

Once May has become an expert coordinator, she expressed her gratitude to Ash for all the things he teached to her.

As for Ash’s talent on Pokémon battles in this generation, as already mentioned, he became much more mature and expert, his Pokémon battles became truly immersive and his skills as a strategist have gradually consolidated, bringing him, at the end of the Battle Frontier series, to earn the title of Battle Frontier Master.

During the series Battle Frontier, because of the change from 4Kids to Pokémon USA, Ash’s voice has changed from Veronica Taylor to Sarah Natochenny. The latter was chosen because she has a voice much like that of Rica Matsumoto (Japanese Ash’s voice actress), but more mature (although female) and better suited to the current Ash, since he is no longer a child.

Ash in the Diamond & Pearl Saga

The DP series has represented the apex (prior to XYZ) of Ash’s growth as a person and as a trainer. Here, too, he has had to deal with a novice trainer (or precisely a coordinator): Dawn, which immediately showed a lot of admiration for Ash, thanks to his skill as a trainer and for his gentle and reassuring personality.

Dawn often tended to become demoralized, but Ash promptly intervened trying to reassure her and to instill her a bunch of self-confidence.
He also helped her in her trainings. After Dawn succeeded in developing an ingenious technique to use in Contests, based on the rotation of her Pokémon, Ash gave her further proof of his experience, using himself this technique, but strengthening it over time with different variants and bringing it to a higher level, transforming it into a brilliant Countershield.Ash_Dawn_High_Five
In this series, in fact, Ash has also become an expert in the creation of new battling techniques. Ash’s attitudes in this generation are very mature (although occasionally his “playful side” continues to come out) and this is also reflected on his work with Pokémon, with whom often turned out to be very severe, but at the same time sweet, especially against the more timid Pokémon. This kindness with Pokémon put him in collision with Paul, a very rigid trainer, whose attitudes were the exact opposite of those of Ash, but in the end, after the most spectacular battle he ever fought, Ash has put into practice all his experience, managing to defeat Paul and making him more friendly towards pokémon.

Ash in XY Series

The XY series is considered in all respects a sequel of Diamond & Pearl, because there we find an Ash Ketchum mature again and at the same level where we had left him in that series. That level, in the course of history was even exceeded.
It is not a case, in fact, if in the course of the XY series were included very often statements of the protagonists referring to thereturn of the TRUE Ash(Show us what the real Ash can do” “here is the real Ash” etc.).

In this series Ash travels with Serena, Clemont and Bonnie. All of them consider Ash a reference point and a special person. They have a lot of admiration for him, and often make use of his advices to deal with life and its difficulties. Serena in particular is in love with Ash since they were children. On that occasion, Ash helped her after she had lost in a forest.

Translation: Ash drags the other, he is full of vitality and always cheerful. He is positive and does not give up in the face of adversity. In every situation he grits his teeth and goes on!

Regarding the physical aspect, Ash’s current height is 5’05” (1 meter and 65 centimeters tall).  In some scenes it might be a bit disproportionate because, as  explained in this Bulbapedia’s article, the anime’s drawers almost never comply with the proportions between Pokemon and characters.

Despite Ash’s height should be a little ambiguous to allow everyone to identify with him, in the episodes it was also possible to note a stature growth.

The official proportions of the characters confirm that, in the first series, Ash’s stature was actually the one represented in the examples you have just seen; while in the most recent episodes, Ash is always higher than the first series.

In this regard, it is also a fact that in the series XY, new trainers as Shauna, Trevor, Mairin and Sawyer are all visibly smaller than Ash. As you know, a professor is not allowed to give the first Pokémon to a child under 10 years.

We also observe how the same drawer has developed Ash’s features in time through these images:

For consistency, all the images you just seen are by Masaaki Iwane, the best animation director in Pokémon Anime, which makes the most fluid and realistic designs. However you have to take into account that there are many other designers, each with his own style some more realistic and some less.

Ash’s Method of training and fighting style

ita icon_satoshipedia

Ash says that he and his Pokemon are like a big family and this affects his training method, based primarily on trust and on encouragement of his Pokémon, in order to develop their strong points.

Many trainers tend to think that in order to strenghten a Pokémon it is necessary to work on his weaknesses, but Ash realized that the best thing is to use the strengths of a Pokémon to cover its weaknesses.

To cite an example: when his Turtwig has evolved into Grotle has not been able to move as fast as before, so Ash helped the Pokemon to change his fighting style, working on the resistance, so that Grotle could have been able to take lumps, rather than dodge them, and then attack at the right time.

Although Ash instills much confidence and positivity to his Pokémon (to the point of being willing to make as target of their moves in order to help them), in training he often becomes severe and intransigent. He doesn’t claim that his Pokémon tire too much or sacrifice themselves in any way, but he demands commitment and will, saying they should never give up and that evolution can never replace a bit of healthy work.

Regarding evolutions, Ash has always been very understanding with his Pokémon: he doesn’t force a Pokémon to evolve, especially if against his will, because he claims that a Pokémon can become very powerful without evolving if trained with patience and love (which is possible in the animated series, being different from the game).

One of the greatest of Ash’s skill is to know how to devise tactics based on the battles of others, and then customize and strengthen them in his own way. A clear example of this is the Counter Shield, Ash’s most important technique, to which he has arrived after having upgraded with time two techniques developed by Dawn: the Spinning and the Ice Aqua Jet.

The Spinning consisted in rotating the Pokémon, a way to avoid elegantly and efficiently the shots. Ash had the idea to strengthen this technique with rotations of different directions, which gave rise to a spectacular battle in the first Sinnoh Gym.

Later, Dawn had the idea to use Ice Beam to transform her Buizel’s Aqua Jet in a ice bullet, but she was never able to reach the desired effect. When Buizel became Ash’s Pokémon (following an exchange with Dawn), he understood that, in order to ensure a successful technique, Buizel had to rotate. In this way it was able to complete the move, which has been renamed “Ice Aqua Jet”. The same Dawn said that it was necessary Ash’s ability for the technique to come out.

The last level where Ash brought these rotations is the Counter Shield, a technique entirely created by him which consists of blocking an opponent’s attack by using another one, in order to attack and defend at the same time.

It was originally designed to contrast the gym leader Fantina’s Hypnosis.

Ash got this idea when he saw Lucinda’s Ambipom contrasting Delcatty’s Sing using Double Hit. Then, the boy decided to strengthen this strategy, applying the tactics of the spinning: rotating and simultaneously launching their special attacks, Pokémon would have created a barrier with which they would have blocked the opponents’ moves, and at the same time attack the opponent Pokémon.

During the battle with Fantina, it has been created a situation which led Ash to reveal another characteristic of his Counter Shield. It could block not only Hypnosis, but also other moves, like Dark Pulse. Fantina was taken by surprise… after seeing Ash’s Counter Shield, she decided to make trouble for Ash, lining up on the field its Mismagius, unable to use Hypnosis.

Ash’s motto is “The best way to defend is to attack”, which is reflected, in fact, also in the technique of Counter Shield that he has developed. Ash generally prefer to use the attacks as a defense, rather than dodge, but of course, he is also adept at dodging hits: he always teaches his Pokémon to wait until the last second before dodging a move, in order to surprise their opponents.

Thanks to the original episodes, we can see that Ash is also excellent at physics sciences. He used several times: levers, forces, accelerations and combinations of natural elements to his advantage.

Ash is in fact known to all to be a very skilled strategist.
He’s able to devise sudden strategies, that no one would dare even think, when he is in a critical situation, displacing the opponent who lowers his guard thinking he practically won. Most of these sudden strategies are based on the control of the battle field, that Ash always manages to use to the advantage of his Pokémon (For example he made Chimchar skate on a piece of ice because he could not move on frozen ground, or use rocks as if they were trees to make quickly move his Treecko, a Pokémon who’s used to move and live in forests).

Regarding to this, Brock said several times that “Ash is a genius at gaining total control of the Battle Field”. This is what makes him unbeatable.

Ash’s strategist skills are also visible in other situations: sometimes he pretends to be in difficulty or have made a mistake and keeps hidden until his Pokémon’s last few techniques, just to let down the opponent’s guard. Ash is extremely crafty during battle, much more than it seems and it is very difficult to deceive him, as said, for example, by the same gym leader Fantina.

One thing that Ash always recommendeds to those who ask him advice about the battles is to keep focused: you should never be distracted and think of something else, but try as much as possible to be in tune with your own Pokémon, in order to understand when it’s pushed to its limits and to be ready for every single situation.
